Veterinary Technician Job Description Responsibilities: •Execute any assigned task related to veterinary medicine excluding diagnosis, prognosis, prescription of medications and/or treatment and surgery •Maintain a professional demeanor including a neat, clean, uniformed appearance with name tag •Maintain all hospital areas in a neat, clean, odor free, and organized fashion •Exhibit strong customer service skills by demonstrating compassionate, professional, ethical, positive interactions with all clients in all situations •Obtain patient histories •Educate clients with sound, proven veterinary information using clear, understandable terminology •Prepare patients for veterinary exams by assessing stability (TPR) •Prioritize patient comfort, including cleanliness •Assist veterinarian in all areas of practice including: effective, compassionate and fear free patient restraint, treatment and follow up of dogs, cats and other species. •Work with other staff in a professional and friendly manner as part of the VRCCE team •Clean, prepare and maintain the surgical suite, equipment and instruments •Clean, prepare and maintain radiology equipment •Expose and develop diagnostic radiographs •Prepare patients for surgery, monitor anesthesia, and assist in surgery •Assist reception to answer telephone in friendly and courteous manner and facilitate client needs •Work as a team to maintain cleanliness and ensure that all equipment and facilities are in good working order •Accurately collect specimens (blood, urine, feces, etc), execute in house lab testing and process outside lab samples •Skillfully perform intravenous catheterization, phlebotomy, intubation and properly administer injectable, oral and topical medications •Accurately dispense medications and products as prescribed by the veterinarian •Accurately expose dental radiographs •Skillfully perform dental prophylaxis and charting as dictated by vet, assist in dental surgery •Dress and bandage wounds and injuries •Assist in humane euthanasia and respectful disposition of remains •Efficiently multitask by performing any necessary technician responsibilities, receptionist and assistant duties, and any other tasks as assigned •When working alone, assume responsibility for opening and closing VRCCE, including: performing end of day, end of month and end of year business, and securing controlled drugs and premises
These responsibilities do not entail any activities prohibited by the Veterinary Practice Act of Maine. The technician performs all functions under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian.
Qualifications: 1.Minimum education is a veterinary technology license. 2.Must be familiar and have experience with laboratory and clinical techniques, uses of veterinary drugs, instruments and equipment, anesthetic and surgical nursing and monitoring including instrumentation. 3.Must possess computer proficiency to work efficiently in a paperless work environment. 4.Must be of good moral character, have an even disposition and be able to deal effectively and politely with people from all types of backgrounds and experience and in all types of difficult situations. Must have the ability to evaluate problems accurately and display common sense and sound judgment when working without supervision and under emotional stress. 5.Must be physically capable of performing all the duties including moderately heavy work. Required to lift at least 50 pounds. 6.Must have a high level of professionalism and strong interpersonal and team player.
