The Staff Veterinarian will assist the public in all aspects of shelter programs, including sharing information to enhance the public's knowledge of animal welfare as well as their knowledge of the Houston SPCA's mission and programs. They will provide information in a helpful, positive and timely fashion, giving the public information needed to assist them with an educated decision for the welfare of animals.
Essential Functions of the position:
Diagnose and prescribe treatment for sick and injured stray animals in the shelter environment.
Conduct observations of bite animals undergoing rabies quarantine to ensure compliance with state rabies regulations.
Perform surgical procedures relevant to shelter animal care, which may include farm animals.
Advise on disease management in the shelter animal population and serve as a resource to management with animal-related issues.
Provide clinical supervision of Veterinary Technicians administering vaccinations and treatments to stray and Houston SPCA animals.
Participate in cruelty cases, including representing the Houston SPCA in court.
Maintain assigned equipment, supplies and vehicles in safe condition and report any problems or needed repairs to the Director of Animal Services and/or Medical Director.
Protect all confidential information, including customers, donors, animals and internal communications.
Represent the Houston SPCA by providing excellent customer service and focus.
Knowledge, skill and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position:
Graduation from a college or university accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine
Currently licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Texas
Current DEA license for controlled substances
Understand, promote and follow the mission of the Houston SPCA
Understand, comprehend and communicate Houston SPCA adoption policies and procedures as well as Houston SPCA partners and their respective products and services
Knowledge of the Houston SPCA policies and protocols, such as, but not limited to admitting, cleaning and medical protocols
Working knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions, and animal handling and behavior
Ability to handle animals safely, with patience and gentleness despite noise, distractions and stressful conditions
Ability to display exceptional service and represent the Houston SPCA in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers and staff
Ability to create and sustain positive working relationships within the Houston SPCA, with volunteers and the public and be a team player
Must be patient, courteous and work well under stressful conditions
Knowledge and ability to accurately work with detailed information in paper and electronic form
Ability to read, write and communicate effectively
Ability to learn and quickly adapt to changes in programs and procedures
Valid Texas Driver’s License and insurable under the Houston SPCA auto policy
Ability to work unscheduled hours
Ability to lift 50 lbs
Additional Salary Information: We offer a competitive salary starting off at $115,000 per year in addition to a comparable benefits package.
