SoBran is seeking a Veterinary Technician III to serveat our Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland location.
OVERVIEW: Responsibilities of this position are that of a Veterinary Technician III for the MRICD-PHC, Animal Care and Research Support Services contract. This position reports to the Veterinary Technician Supervisor. Responsible for all activities required for the proper care and maintenance of research animals within VMSB.
Understand and follows all SOP’s and Quality Assurance Standards
Participate in weekly technical or SOP training
Serve as the subject matter expert in their area
Forward thinking and create and assist in developing plans to enhance the learning abilities and performance of the staff working on the contract
Possess strong written and verbal communication skills and organizational skills
Provide technical guidance and training to level I and level II staff
Perform daily animal health checks and administer clinical treatments as directed
Identify and communicate signs of abnormal or poor health
Facilitate customer relations between military, government, and contractor personnel in regards to animal health issues
Safely and correctly handle and restrain animals for observation and/or procedures
Provide protocol support as needed
Collect animal census data
Assists with animal receipt and health surveillance as assigned
Maintain facility and equipment (cleaning, use, and calibration)
Collect weights on large and small animals
Assists veterinarian or scientist in surgical procedures
Supports surgery (suite and pack preparation, anesthesia, recovery, clean up)
Collect physiological data (pulse, respiration, heart rate, body temperature, etc)
Maintain accurate documentation and medical records
Perform anesthesia and technical procedures
Assists with the identification tattooing of species as assigned
Provide prophylactic dentistry on animals as needed
Assists with catheter maintenance as assigned
Collect samples for diagnostic testing
Instruct hands on trainings and labs
Dispose of animal carcasses following SOPs.
Prepare biohazard and dispose of waste from the facility following appropriate SOPs.
Assist with receipt, stocking and maintenance of all supply inventories
Supervise Animal Care Technicians during weekend shifts
Assume responsibilities in the absence of the Veterinary Technician Supervisor
Maintain clean and organized work and personal areas
Able to navigate Work Order system and computer programs
Operate several government vehicles
Perform all other duties, as assigned.
Required Schedule: All employees are expected to perform their duties as assigned, arrive to work at 8:00 am and depart at 4:30 pm M-F. This position will be required to work on the weekends and holidays as scheduled. The weekend/holiday hours are from 7:00 am-1:00 pm. During the assigned weekend shift this position will be on call from Tuesday through Monday and responsible for assisting with an emergency situation or if any unexpected situation arises until work is completed.
Required experience: Qualified candidates must have a valid driver’s license and be able to lift 50 lbs. Must also have the ability to wear PPE including respirators. Capable of maintaining and documenting logs in accordance with SOPs.
Required education: Must have a high school diploma; expectation of a 2 yr. degree or equivalent work experience or completed a certified veterinary technician program. Be certified by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT). Take and pass LAT certification within one year of eligibility.
