About Us

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity in a fast-growing, privately owned specialty and emergency practice? Veterinary Referral & Critical Care is seeking an ICU/ER Nursing Supervisor to work cohesively with our management team. Open since 1997, our doors have never shut and we have been dedicated to providing emergency and specialty care to pets and their people in the Richmond and surrounding areas. We expanded our Emergency Department around 2 years ago to provide emergency care 24/7 and offer specialty services including Surgery, Neurology, Internal Medicine, and Canine Rehabilitation.

About You

You are team oriented and have excellent communication skills with fellow team members, clients and the referral community and possess the will to thrive in a dynamic environment. You are dedicated to practicing the highest quality of veterinary care and responsible for providing strong clinical support to the Emergency/ICU Technicians. You will enjoy working and collaborating closely with the Specialty Nursing Supervisors, Office Manager and Hospital Administrator. You will ensure clients, patients and referral partners receive quality care. The position provides an opportunity to work with board-certified specialists while learning about state-of-the-art medicine.

Responsibilities

Although additional duties and related tasks may be assigned, the essential duties and your primary responsibilities will include the following:

  • Assist in problem-solving, conflict resolutions, mentorship, disciplinary action, and performance-improvement plans.
  • Work with the Office Manager to schedule ICU/ER nursing staff using scheduling software to provide adequate and appropriate coverage.
  • Oversee floor staff and ensure organization policies and procedures are followed while working on the floor.
  • Provide support to Office Manager by assisting in implementing training, employing new policies and procedures, and ensuring all standards of veterinary nursing care are upheld.
  • Assist Office Manager with the full cycle of timely performance reviews for new hires; 90-day probationary period and annual reviews.
  • Maintain a current and well-rounded knowledge of all medication administration routes, equipment use, patient monitoring, medical care, pharmacology, medical terminology and medical restraint, as well as laboratory, radiology and surgical pre-and post-op procedures.
  • Work on the floor to be able to shadow and evaluate the training of current and new team members, recommends processes of improvements, monitors new processes into placement.
  • Participates in management team meetings and training.
  • The Emergency Service operates 24 hours per day, 365 days a year and, thus, requires the ICU/ER Nursing Supervisor to work and/or be available for extended hours including evening, weekends and holidays.

 

Qualifications, Experience and Characteristics

  • Minimum five years working in a clinical setting, specialty practice experience highly preferred.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Veterinary technician licensure is mandatory as you will be working as a technician.
  • Experience utilizing team building techniques and/or mentoring skills.
  • Dedication to personal professional development and staying abreast of new nursing techniques and skills and contributing to the establishment and implementation of evidence-based nursing standards of practice.
  • Ability to communicate (written and verbal) and negotiate effectively in a demanding and complex environment while maintaining and encouraging a positive attitude.
  • Maintain positive relationship with Hospital Administrator, Office Manager, Specialty Nurse Managers, hospital owners, and veterinarians as well as all members of the team (veterinary nurses, client services team, clients, students, and referring veterinary practices).
  • Understanding of OSHA and AAHA guidelines for veterinary hospitals.
  • Adheres to established policies, standards of care and of veterinary nursing practice as dictated by the Virginia Board of Veterinary Medicine, Virginia Board of Pharmacy, DEA and OSHA.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the capability to form cooperative working relationships.
  • Good organizational leadership with the ability to oversee the interests of nurses and doctors toward the larger objective.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Physical capabilities: heavy lifting and/or carrying (50lbs and over); walking (up to 6 hours); standing (up to 10 hours); Repeated bending (up to 1 hour);

 

About Veterinary Referral and Critical Care
Open since 1997, VRCC is a progressive and ever-growing 24 hour emergency and specialty care facility with a well-established referral base. At the heart of our 16,000 sq. ft. facility is a 3,500 sq. ft. intensive care unit which is set up to accommodate and provide state of the art care to the most critical patients. We offer a wide range of diagnostics including on-site MRI, EMG, in-house lab, 2 ultrasounds, a dedicated echocardiogram, endoscopy, laparoscopy, ECG, telemetry, digital holter monitor, and digital radiology. Located in the suburb of Manakin-Sabot, VRCC is 20 minutes from the city of Richmond and 45 minutes from Charlottesville. Residents can enjoy the culture of downtown Richmond which is home to museums and historical sites, a wide variety of restaurants, microbreweries, and local shops. Those who enjoy the outdoors can go to Maymont Park, Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens, go boating or canoeing on the James River, and visit local wineries and orchards.
