Reporting directly to the Vice President of Animal Welfare, the Chief Veterinarian will be responsible for mentoring and providing leadership to our team of licensed Veterinarians and Veterinary Services team. Our hospital is equipped with modern diagnostic equipment for triaging injured animals from the eight counties that make up the Greater Houston area. We have digital radiography, ultrasound, and in-house laboratory equipment. Our campus now has a brand new Adoption Center, Wildlife Center, Education building, and a new barn and arena. The next phase of our construction project will include renovations and expansion to our current veterinary hospital and rehabilitation center, allowing us to grow our program even more.
Essential Functions of the Position:
Serve on management team to assist in decisions related to procedures and policies related to veterinary medicine and serve as a resource for animal-related issues.
Evaluate medical policies and procedures for efficiency. Available to answer questions from staff and correct any policy and/or procedure violations.
Help develop and implement policies and procedures to prevent and control disease in mixed populations.
Develop teams and individuals to uphold team culture and values of teamwork, compassion, efficiency and responsibility. Recruit, mentor, retain and teach veterinarians and veterinary staff on best practices and compliance to appropriate standards of professionalism, patient care, and individual professional development. Instructing, training and assisting veterinary services staff with their duties, use of equipment, and materials in assigned areas.
Conduct monthly meetings with Veterinary Service team members.
Create monthly schedules for all veterinarians.
Perform clinical and surgical veterinary duties. Medical cases with the majority being canine and feline patients, with a small percentage of exotics, wildlife, large animal, equine and other species. Provide clinical leadership and expertise on all aspects of medical cases & surgical care.
Conduct observations of bite animals undergoing rabies quarantine to ensure compliance with State Rabies Regulations.
Assist in medical forensics for cruelty investigations, which includes performing physical examinations/necropsies, developing treatment protocols, providing testimony and documentation of the condition of animals that are involved in cruelty investigations. Assist with the coordination of external resources related to the development of veterinary-related evidence as needed. Testify in court, as needed.
Oversee, review, and train staff on the Certified Technician training materials. Develop curriculum and train staff in medical care and protocols. Evaluate, create and coordinate training and handle the development needs of staff and volunteers to assure professional standards of performance.
Develop and lead Shelter Medicine courses with Texas A&M and other accredited veterinary schools in the U.S.
Ensure compliance with rules and regulations of TX, federal and other governing bodies including, OSHA, DEA and the TX Board of Veterinary Examiners.
Knowledge, skill and abilities needed to perform the essential functions of this position:
Graduate from a college or university accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.
Currently licensed or eligible to be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Texas.
DEA license for controlled substances.
5 years paid experience in the field of veterinary medicine preferred, with experience with high volume surgeries preferred.
3 years of professional supervisory experience in a hospital setting preferred.
Working knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions, and animal handling and behavior.
Exceptional leadership in teaching or mentoring veterinary students, interns or recent graduate DVM’s.
