PEAK, a division of URUS, has an immediate opening for an Associate Director of Biosecurity position. (DVM)
This position is responsible for the health and biosecurity of bovine AI animals that PEAK presently houses in its facilities in Alberta. The role assures that PEAK’s production systems in Canada and the products produced fit with national and international regulations monitored and dictated by the CFIA. The role provides veterinary care, consulting and oversight for PEAK livestock in Canada and monitors performance in the area of biosecurity, livestock health, care and thereby facilitates and maximizes life-time productions and sales on PEAKS’s livestock. The role leads and receives assistance from PEAK’s location dedicated health specialists & health coordinators to assure further development in the area livestock health and care. The role is integral part of PEAK’s global Operations team, a member of PEAK’s global production team, and the role reports to PEAK’s head veterinarian who works out of PEAK locations in the US.
PRIMARY OBJECTIVES OF POSITION
To assist in providing leadership for the PEAK animal health and livestock production management programs. To protect the health and well-being of PEAK animals by providing veterinary services and oversight into animal management protocols. To facilitate the export of PEAK products by carrying out testing, herd certification programs and regulatory oversight to comply with URUS, national, international and CFIA requirements. MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY
Collaborate with PEAK Production Managers to establish and monitor disease testing, surveillance and biosecurity management programs at all PEAK locations to protect the safety of PEAK products and customers and expedite the delivery of products to the international marketplace.
Identify, evaluate, and implement new diagnostic technology.
Establish and monitor compliance of biosecurity protocols for all PEAK livestock operations and service programs and evaluate and recommend protocols for all PEAK locations.
Development of sustainable, efficient and secure production systems infrastructure.
Work with the PEAK team to support, critique and analyze all programs and procedures involved with animal care, housing, nutrition and production.
Provide herd certification as required by CFIA for PEAK locations in Alberta and coordinate certification at other facilities.
A willingness to learn and the capability to interact effectively with regulatory bodies
Participate in both internal and external training with intent to increase competency and capability to take on additional management and strategic responsibility within the PEAK organization.
Collaborate with PEAK Production Managers to provide/arrange for veterinary services at PEAK livestock facilities in coordination with local veterinarians to maintain the health and productivity of all animals.
Provide clinical veterinary services as needed at the Alberta bull facilities.
Coordinate and advise on treatment of heifers and bulls at other production locations.
Evaluate health and acceptability of all incoming animals and communicate adverse findings to appropriate staff and brand managers and acquisition staff.
Assist in developing educational information and management tools to share with the PEAK operations staff and PEAK partners/ clients
Seek out and stay up to date on new research, technologies, programs, processes and procedures in all aspects of livestock health, nutrition and reproductive performance
Promote and adhere to safety in the workplace

Follow safe work procedures and report unsafe conditions.

Participate in safety meetings and safety committees.
Complete required training assignments, forms, and other paper work.
DVM - degree
Licensed in Alberta
Valid drivers license
Strong interest in applying continuous improvement systems in the areas of calf health, growth and nutrition and reproductive physiology and biosecurity
Strong understanding of dairy cattle genetics and the dairy cattle industry.
Strong background and skills in editing and analyzing data.
Able to perform critical audits of current PEAK programs and standards and communicate with persuasive skills with the PEAK team to make any necessary improvements.
Self-starting and self-motivated person to make continuous improvement.
Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
Must have an excellent work ethic and organizational skills
Willingness to travel
