Petco is seeking a Director of Veterinary Medicine to promote the company initiative that ‘Animals Come First’ through the immediate and effective resolution of animal issues as they arise. This position will develop and implement long-term measures to improve animal care and management through effective education of partners and customers. The purpose of this position is to improve the quality of animals arriving at stores, enhance and maintain animal health conditions while at the stores, and improve customer satisfaction with animals and supplies post sale.

Job Responsibilities include but not limited to:  

  • Partner with CMO to develop and implement vendor certification program including feasibility assessment, site visits, training of auditors, and working with vendors to direct corrective actions.
  • Provide direction to Performance and Learning with the development and implementation of partner Training initiatives and materials as they pertain to animal health and care issues, including evaluating the results of training programs and recommending future enhancements.
  • Assist operations through store visits and infrastructure assessment by providing regular review and evaluation of care sheets, training materials, Policies & Procedures and Planograms pertaining to animal care and presentation.
  • Act as advisor to management regarding ways to identify and comply with laws. Assist in the development and maintenance of animal care sheets and act as liaison between stores and Animal Control or Public Health officials.
  • Identify recurring animal issues and develop and implement long-term solutions through the use of animal incident reports, visitation reports, and working with vendors and corporate departments.

Requirements and Licensure include but not limited to: 

  • Must be a licensed Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) with accreditation in the United States
  • A minimum of 3 years experience practicing veterinary medicine is required including experience and/or advanced training in the care and treatment of small non-traditional mammals, reptiles, avian and aquatic life
  • A Master of Public Health or experience with public health and zoonotic diseases is desired
  • Two or more years’ experience or training in business management or economics is preferred

Position location: San Diego, CA but open to San Antonio, TX
