The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national not-for-profit association established in 1863 & representing over 96,000 veterinarians working in private & corporate practice, government, industry, academia, & uniformed services, is seeking a Manager of State Advocacy to join our Division of State Advocacy located in our Washington, D.C. office to help implement the AVMA’s state legislative & regulatory initiatives.  The mission of the Association is to lead the profession by advocating for our members & advancing the science & practice of veterinary medicine to improve animal & human health. 

Reporting to the Division Director, the State Policy Analyst will work to support related activities of the Association’s constituent organizations (state & allied veterinary medical associations) across a range of issues anticipated to benefit from veterinary professionals’ input & influence, with particular attention to the AVMA’s state-level advocacy agenda, the strategic objectives of the Advocacy business unit, & the overall strategic objectives of the AVMA. They will work collaboratively with AVMA’s volunteer leadership, staff, & constituent organizations to create & provide resources on issues pertaining to the scientific & business interests of the veterinary profession. In addition, the Manager will assist the AVMA’s State Advocacy Committee & the Governmental Relations Division in developing recommendations & implementing approved programs that will support a robust, effective, & collaborative state-level advocacy agenda that meets the AVMA’s public policy & advocacy objectives.

To be successful in this role, you must be highly collaborative & passionate about AVMA’s mission & increasing member satisfaction & engagement.  Additional qualifications include:

  • BA or BS in political science, public policy or a related field
  • Minimum of 3 years of related work experience with demonstrated knowledge of & experience with state-level advocacy initiatives at a professional association; engagement with state chapters a plus.
  • Must possess excellent project management & organizational skills & be able to effectively prioritize competing demands & projects.
  • Must have strong relationship-building skills.
  • Must be able to identify, read, analyze, & interpret legislation, regulations, other public policy documents, program descriptions, & related analyses that have the potential to impact the practice of veterinary medicine.
  • Must be able to clearly define problems, collect & interpret data, establish facts, draw conclusions, & convey related information in an effective & timely fashion to AVMA leadership, membership, & other staff of the AVMA & its constituent organizations.
  • Must be able to effectively interact & communicate in writing & verbally, with members of the scientific & nonscientific communities, employees of governmental & nongovernmental organizations, legislators, regulators, & their staffs.
  • Must be able to present information effectively; demonstrable public speaking experience is a plus.
  • Must be able to effectively deal with interpersonal conflicts & maintain confidentiality in communications.
  • Must function well autonomously & as a team member.
  • Basic computer skills (e.g., proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, & various internet browsers & search engines), as well as familiarity with legislative & regulatory search programs & engines, are required.
  • Up to 10% travel.
