Do you want to work at a practice with great support staff, mentoring, and collegiality? Are you excited about the opportunity to join an amazing team with ambitious goals? The San Francisco SPCA is looking to welcome a veterinarian to help us achieve our goal of providing extraordinary care to all pets in San Francisco. We have led our city to become one of the most humane cities in the world. We accomplished this through dedication, innovation, and collaboration; we are looking to hire bright, passionate people who embrace those values.

Our practice boasts a strong culture of collegiality and mentoring. Reviews with our medical director focus on goals and professional development rather than production, and we are constantly looking for ways to promote learning, growth, and skill mastery in our team. Our ideal candidate comes in with a strong, evidence-based medicine approach, surgical experience, and a desire to push themselves to higher levels of excellence. If you want to expand and deepen your skills in a supportive environment and help others do the same, the SF SPCA is the place for you.

We have two locations, one in Pacific Heights and our Mission Campus Hospital which provides emergency services, wellness and prevention programs, surgery and dentistry, with closely integrated behavior and internal medicine specialty services. Diagnostics and treatment options within this facility include ultrasound, flexible endoscopy, video otoscopy, digital radiography, HDVI, Nova electrolyte/chemistry analyzer, and an IDEXX in-house laboratory suite among others. There is consistent surgical specialist support in addition to 24-hour radiology interpretation services. Our medical staff provide excellent care in defined roles in surgery, dentistry, ICU, and outpatient, while cross training ensures that staff with the necessary skills are always available.

The hospital has provided exceptional patient and client care to privately owned pets in the City for decades, and we are always pushing the boundaries on our medicine and client service. We recently announced the SF SPCA Vision and Goals for 2030 that include access to care: By 2030, all San Francisco pet guardians will have access to quality preventative care for their pets, regardless of income. In pursuit of this goal, we will expand and deepen our services in order to subsidize care for all. We are excited to bring veterinarians on board who want to be a part of this enterprise!

Over time, we have fostered a loyal clientele who share our desire to do what is best for their beloved furry companions. In addition to serving full paying clients, the San Francisco SPCA provides a financial assistance program allowing veterinarians to provide care for many clients who have no veterinary care options available to them. Our ability to provide these services to the local community in need leads to immense professional and personal gratification for our staff veterinarians.

As the veterinary industry changes, not-for-profit veterinary organizations remain a solid and dependable employer, more likely to offer compensation packages meeting and surpassing industry standards for all employees.  Our organization works hard to ensure benefits and work/life balance that may be harder to find at for-profit practices. Furthermore, the efforts you make on behalf of the SF SPCA will provide community care to clients and patients who have depended on us for over 150 years.

The starting salary for this position depends on the length and breadth of experience. You will be eligible for full benefits package including PTO and holiday pay, medical, dental & vision insurance, life insurance, long-term disability, tax-deferred retirement plan, pre-tax commute expense deductions, discounted veterinary care, employee discounts on retail, pet supplies, and dog training classes, financial support and time off for continuing education.
