Provide appropriate veterinary care and regulatory compliance consistent with Standard Operating Procedures and in accordance with the Animal Welfare Act, The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the Ag Guide. This includes but is not limited to implementation of the preventive health program, research support and consultation, disease surveillance and prevention, colony management, teaching, and weekend/holiday rotation.

  1. Provide veterinary care for regulated animals at MSU.
    2. Participate in or conduct diagnostic pathological and microbiological procedures.
    3. Provide technical support and/or participate collaboratively in research projects and provide training and consultative services for scientists wishing to use animals.
    4. Work closely with LARAC staff to ensure that the housing, husbandry and care of regulated animals remain in compliance.
    5. Develop and maintain programs of preventative medicine, animal health surveillance and colony management.
    6. Serve as a facilitative expert in the use of animals in a regulated environment. May serve as an alternate on the IACUC, review protocols, write SOPS, and serve in the capacity of director as needed.
    7. Consult with researchers on protocol development and animal model selection.
    8. Work closely with the veterinary technology program to include teaching, training and technical support.
    9. Perform related duties as assigned.

    Supervisory Responsibility
    1. Provide direct supervision of LARAC and/or student veterinary technicians and/or indirect supervision of LARAC staff.

About Mississippi State University Office of Research & Economic Development
The core purpose of the Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED) is to advance Mississippi State University's preeminence in research and spur economic growth. ORED provides services to support research and strategically leads the university's economic development activities. ORED's functions range form supporting the identification of new research funding opportunities and submission of grant proposals to post-award financial management and research regulatory affairs. The office directs research commercialization, including patenting and licensing, and serves as a central point for industry access. As part of ORED, the Director of Animal Resources and Attending Veterinarian reports directly to the Vice President of Research and Economic Development and will serve as a member of the senior leadership team. The regulated animal care programs include facilities within the main campus in Starkville, and also facilities in Pearl and Stoneville, MS. These facilities house a wide variety of vertebrate species used in biomedical research and instruction.
