Job Summary

The Veterinarian has the primary responsibility for patient care, striving to provide the highest quality medical and surgical care for patients.  Stays closely connected to the JM Pet Resort mission and makes decisions in keeping with core policies and values, to treat all pets like family.


Essential Job Functions

  • Comprehensive patient work ups
    • Obtain complete history in conjunction with technician
    • Perform thorough physical exams including temp, pulse, respiration, body condition score for each patient
    • Recommend all appropriate comprehensive diagnostic screening
    • Correctly interpret diagnostic results
    • Make comprehensive wellness recommendations tailored to individual patient
  • Client communication and education
    • Always asks if client has further questions or needs before leaving the room or discharging patient
    • Communicate medical findings, recommended diagnostics, prognosis and recommended plan to pet owner
    • Note any recommendations declined by pet owner in medical record
  • Diagnostic procedures & surgery
    • Performs appropriate pre-op exams & diagnostics
    • Practices good surgical techniques
    • Ability to use and delegate appropriate surgical prep techniques with technician
    • Calls back clients with results of diagnostic tests and provide copy with interpretation for pet owner
    • Review discharge instructions with technician or owner
  • Medical Record Responsibilities
    • Record patient exams in medical records
    • Complete records by end of work day, no records are to leave the resort
    • Fully document all patient care to ensure good case management
    • Complete medical records in a legible and complete manner
  • Pharmacy duties
    • Prescribe appropriate medication for patient conditions with appropriate dosing
    • Approve prescriptions, reviews label for accuracy
    • Maintain security of controlled drugs and logs controlled substances consistently
  • Promotes teamwork & staff efficiency
    • Assist in keeping appointments running on time
    • Promote a positive attitude throughout the practice
    • Be available to colleagues/management when off duty for matters that cannot wait
    • Exhibit a technical knowledge of medications/diets/products sold, especially nutritional products from the JM Pet Resort retail store and demonstrate salesmanship abilities. Explain and educate clients on the products and services and answer questions concerning these products and services.
    • Knowledgeable in PLAYtrain techniques of JM Pet Resort and able to implement those when handling dogs.
  • Other duties may be assigned as the need arises

 

Physical Demands (Movement)

  • Standing/Walking: Must be able to conduct all entire shift on foot
  • Balancing: Must be able to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling
  • Stooping: Must be able to bend body downward and forward, requiring full use of lower extremities and back muscles
  • Kneeling: Must be able to bend legs at knees to come to rest on knee(s)
  • Crouching: Must be able to bend body downward and forward by bending legs and spine
  • Crawling: Must be able to move about on hands and knees or hands and feet
  • Reaching: Must be able to extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction
  • Handling: Must be able to seize, hold, grasp, turn, or otherwise work with hand(s)
  • Fingering: Must be able to pick, pinch, or otherwise work with fingers
  • Feeling: Must be able to perceive attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips

Physical Demands (Strength)

  • Standing and Bending: Must be able to conduct majority of shift on foot, frequently in a bent position
  • Lifting from floor to exam table: Must be able to lift dogs up to 40 lbs.; with assistance from 1 person, must be able to lift dog up to 100 lbs.; with assistance from 2 others, must be able to lift dog up to 150 lbs.
  • NOTE: Dogs being lifted are generally anesthetized and virtually are at a “dead” weight
  • Must be able to exert up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force to move objects

Physical Demands (Auditory)

  • Hearing: Must be able to perceive the nature of sounds to receive detailed oral communication; must be able to hear animal sounds such as whimpering, crying and barking; must be able to hear sounds in a noisy room with ambient noises; must be able to hear communications via walkie-talkie or loud-speaker
  • Talking: Must be able to express or exchange ideas by means of spoken work; must be able to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to others accurately, loudly, and quickly
  • Noise: Must be able to perform duties successfully in noisy areas with multiple barking dogs

Physical Demands (Vision)

  • Color Detection: Must be able to identify and distinguish color; must be able to discern color-coded safety communications, color-coded signs, color-coded collars and leashes, color-coded caution identifiers and all other color-coded mechanisms and systems
  • Motion and Depth Perception/Three-Dimensional Vision: Must be able to observe actions happening around you (to the left, right, above, below, as well as in front) Must be able to judge distances and spatial relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are
  • Near Acuity: Must have clarity of vision at 20 inches or less; must be able to use computers; must be able to read/create print communications such as name tags, lists, signs, kennel cards
  • Far Acuity: Must have clarity of vision at 20 feet or more; must be able to observe actions across the work area

Job Hazards

  • Exposure to animal bites and scrapes
  • Exposure to contagious disease or infection
  • Exposure to contaminants
  • Exposure to radiation
  • Restraining large animals in an agitated state
  • Frequent bending, lifting and twisting (see complete list of physical demands)
  • Must be prepared to cope with euthanasia and the trauma endured by caretakers who deal with illness, death and dying on a regular basis

 

Dress Code

  • Scrub sets in all black or grey; black bottoms with either a teal or sea-foam green color top is also permitted

 

Computer Skills

  • Must be able to learn and efficiently use Vetter, Gingr, VitusVet, One Note, Electronic calendar management & Go Daddy email, When I Work and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must be able to learn new technology in accordance with business needs.

 

Qualifications    

  • 7-10 years practicing Veterinary Medicine in a hospital/clinic setting
  • Passionate about animal welfare; treats all animals with compassion and kindness
  • Uses multiple software platforms daily to accomplish business objectives
  • Able to follow rotating work schedule (e.g. nights, weekends and holidays)
  • Team oriented, reliable and dependable; maintain excellent attendance and punctuality
  • Strong work ethic; sets high standards for self and others
