Position Announcement

Texas A&M Veterinary Education, Research & Outreach (VERO)

Bovine Clinical Educator

Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences

College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences

Texas A&M University

West Texas A&M University (WTAMU) Campus

The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVMBS) at Texas A&M University (http://vetmed.tamu.edu/), invites applications for a full-time, 11-month appointment Clinical Track Assistant or Associate Professor to serve as a Bovine  Clinical Educator in our 2+2 DVM program at the Texas A&M Veterinary Education, Research & Outreach program (VERO) on the West Texas A&M University campus in Canyon, Texas. Developed as part of the Texas commitment to animals and agriculture, VERO represents a dynamic partnership between the Texas A&M CVMBS and West Texas A&M University and is set in the heart of one of the most productive animal agricultural regions in the world.  The Texas Panhandle and Plains area is home to the highest density of cattle in the country with approximately 30% of the nation’s beef cattle fed or finished in the region, another 2.5 million beef cattle in the area, and over 300,000 dairy cattle at any given time.  VERO provides unprecedented opportunities for veterinary education and collaboration with industry partners and stakeholders from the region and across the nation.  Canyon, Texas is located near Palo Duro Canyon State Park, home to the second largest canyon in the country.  This area provides scenic hiking, biking, camping and horseback riding. Winter skiing in Taos, NM is within driving distance.

The successful candidate will have an academic home in the Large Animal Clinical Sciences department within the CVMBS and will work collaboratively with VERO faculty members as well as faculty members located on the College Station campus to administer the 2+2 curriculum. The successful candidate will be expected to devote 70% of faculty time to instruction in the 2+2 curriculum, with the remaining time devoted to scholarship (research) and academic citizenship (service). There is an opportunity for a portion of time devoted to clinical instruction in fourth-year clinical rotations occurring in the West Texas region related to the applicant’s specialty. Applicants must have a DVM degree (or equivalent). Board-certification in Large Animal Internal Medicine by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) or the European College of Bovine Health Management (ECBHM) or in the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Beef Cattle, Dairy or Food Animal) or American College of Theriogenology is desired. This is a new program and adjustments in the position design and flexibility in the faculty appointment will be considered.

Teaching responsibilities will include multiple courses in the first two years of the DVM curriculum to a small cohort of veterinary students. These courses will include the Professional and Clinical Skills (PCS) course, which is contiguous through the first six semesters of the curriculum. In this course students gain clinical skills in the simulation laboratory and through critical-thinking and problem-based instruction; this course focuses on professional skills, including communication, ethical decision-making, and personal and professional finance.   This curriculum is integrated and highly experiential, and clinical educators with interest in small-group teaching and active learning are encouraged to apply.  Faculty in the DVM 2+2 program will be expected to “cross-over” and teach in multiple courses to reinforce content related to their subject matter interest across the 2+2 program.

Texas A&M University is the oldest public institution of higher education in Texas and one of the nation’s largest and most dynamic universities.
