The Houston Humane Society is looking for an experienced DVM to join our team. Work in a well-equipped spay/neuter clinic with highly skilled staff.  Must be available for high-volume spay/neuter work and capable of performing surgeries daily. Assisting with exams, diagnostics, lab work, administering vaccines, and medical treatments for the general public and sheltered animals will be included.  Exotic and large animal experience preferred but not required.

Duties include but not limited to:

  • All duties of a DVM as sanctioned by Texas state law.
  • Promotes the health of animals by advising animal owners about sanitation measures, feeding, and general care.
  • Determines nature of disease or injury by examining pets; examining small, large animals.
  • Perform surgical procedures and provides anesthesia services.
  • Orders and evaluates laboratory tests.
  • Provides training of personnel and volunteers in areas such as animal care and nutrition, breeding, and housing and environment; teaches techniques for handling animals with a broad range of temperaments and about restraint requirements.
  • Conducts necropsy to determine the cause of animal death. Analyzes findings and formulates recommendations to prevent future disease or injury. 
  • Prepares and maintains appropriate records.
  • Plans and conducts continuing animal health education.

All other duties that arise in the course of daily operations.

Must be a positive, energetic team player capable of thriving in a fast-paced environment. Strong work ethic and commitment to our mission to end pet overpopulation is paramount. Candidate must possess a DVM/VMD degree and be licensed to practice in Texas and also procure a DEA license. Candidate must be able to work weekends. Requirements

  • Requires a Doctoral degree in Veterinary Medicine. Must be licensed by the Texas State Board of Veterinary Medicine.  License must also include DPS and FDA controlled substance licensure.
  • Maintain current DVM license in good standing.
  • Knowledge of Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters
  • Strong client service skills.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and motivation skills. Has the ability to direct, guide, and assist a group of individuals. Bilingual Spanish language skills both written and spoken preferred, but not necessary.
