Summary of Purpose:  Responsible for high level medical care and sterilization provided to clinic patients in accordance with established policy and procedures.  

 

Duties (Essential Functions):

  • Examine animals pre-op to determine their ability to withstand surgery
  • Adhere to established protocols for sedation and sterilization, providing high quality care
  • Examine animals post-op the ensure appropriate recovery
  • Ability to perform high volume sterilization surgeries
  • Remain in building until all animals have left recovery area and returned to their cages
  • Continue research and maintenance of safe and efficacious medical protocol regarding anesthesia and surgery
  • Supervise handling of controlled substances by medical care team
  • Supervise post-op rechecks and order of medical treatments as necessary to ensure complete surgical recovery
  • Ensure veterinarian support staff are complying with established protocols
  • Supervise medical care team, creating a positive and supportive environment
  • Maintain clean, neat and orderly work area at all times
  • Comply with and enforce clinic procedures and employee manuals
  • Participate in continuing education programs for medical staff
  • Participate in special events and perform other duties as required
  • Assist other KHS programs as needed to provide high level veterinarian care
  • Be respectful of coworkers and treat both subordinate and superior staff in a professional manner
  • Consistently obtain continuing education as it relates to high volume spay/neuter protocols and procedures
  • Actively support spay and neuter, and educate clients on responsible pet ownership
  • Actively support associate staff and volunteers, and promote the development of skills related to the advancement of our goals and mission
  • Be available for emergencies if needed
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Appropriate accreditation and certifications
  • License to practice veterinary medicine in Kentucky
  • Ability to complete a minimum of 40 high quality spay neuter surgeries per day after sufficient training
  • Ability to lift and use full range of motion to include standing, stooping, bending
  • Ability to work independently with little direct supervision
  • Ability to lead others in a positive work environment
  • Excellent conflict resolution, organizational and analytical skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with clients, staff and volunteers
  • Ability to envision long range goals and apply them to daily operations
  • Knowledgeable and supportive of KHS programs
  • Share a passion for service to animals, people and our community
