Calling all experienced ER doctors - Are you looking to take a next step in your career and move into a more administrative role?  Are you interested in having a palpable positive impact in your work environment to help sustain and uphold a collegial and collaborative culture where work-life balance and employee wellness are emphasized?  Are you interested in sharing your experience and knowledge with newer ER docs and serve as mentors?

If this sounds like you, please consider applying for our ER Director position.

The VMC is a privately owned 18,000 sq ft hospital (with plans for upcoming 8,000sqft expansion to include the additional of ophthalmology, dentistry, neurology) that currently offers 24 hour emergency in addition to Internal Medicine, Surgery, Oncology, Radiology, Cardiology, Nutrition, Anesthesiology and Critical Care. In addition, within the VMC exists CARE, a complementary rehabilitation and pain management center. The ER Service has its own technical team to ensure efficient case management. Attached to the VMC is an IDEXX reference laboratory, which enables accurate test results with a fast turnaround time for hospitalized patients.

Emergency clinicians work 3-4 days shifts per week, most shifts being 10 hours, and have 24/7 support by 3 Criticalists and the rest of the specialty team.  ER clinicians are responsible for working rotating shifts to provide 24hr emergency care to our local pet community.  Our schedule provides overlap to ensure you leave at the end of your shift – not hours later.  Your personal time is important to us, and we want you to work hard while with us, but enjoy your time off to rest, explore hobbies or attend social engagements.  The ER doctors are not required to perform major surgeries beyond laceration/wound repair.  All major surgeries are performed by the Surgery Service.  We offer competitive compensation, a comprehensive benefits package, and a balanced schedule.

Criticalists are present 7 days a week and always available to "phone a friend" when needed - even in the middle of the night!  We work WITH the ER Service to ensure efficient case flow and assist with managing critical patients admitted by the ER Service.

The VMC is also very active with local cruelty cases.  We work closely with the Syracuse Police Department and many organizations to help identify , treat and rehome animals who have experienced cruelty and neglect.

The VMC also hosts a successful internship program and ER Immersion Program (a structured mentored program for new grads who do not pursue an internship and are interested in ER medicine).  The ER doctors work with the criticalists in providing mentorship for these new doctors.

Each morning begins with cage-side hospital rounds where all doctors meet to discuss the hospitalized cases.  Not only does this facilitate transfers to specialty services, but also fosters collaboration on patients that require multiple specialists.

By working alongside specialists and fostering an environment of collaboration and ongoing mentorship and learning, an ER position at our hospital offers ongoing mentorship and career advancement.  We value our ER team!
