The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a new position, the Assistant Dean for Students. The Assistant Dean will report to the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs and will provide oversight and lead recruitment, enrollment, professional development and support services for all students in the professional DVM program. In serving these functions, the Assistant Dean for Students will also lead the college’s diversity, equity and inclusion programs and promote ongoing efforts to create and sustain a positive, professional, and inclusive learning environment.  

Responsibilities

 The specific duties and responsibilities of this position are negotiable but are expected to include many of the following:

  • Support student services and events that promote success, wellness, and professional development. This includes fostering and maintaining a welcoming and inclusive environment, assisting with financial aid and career services, and assisting with a variety of other academic and non-academic concerns;
  • Serve as Director of Diversity and Inclusion and implement Diversity Action Plans;
  • Lead recruitment, admissions and enrollment activities; Chair the Admissions committee
  • Chair the Scholarships and Awards committee;
  • Advise the Associate Dean for Students in strategic planning for teaching and assessment efforts within the college;
  • Participate in the college accreditation process;
  • Provide direct and indirect oversight and supervision of additional support staff.

To be successful, the Assistant Dean for Students should have excellent administrative, project management, supervisory, counseling and communication skills and should have an understanding of issues and challenges affecting higher education. The applicant also must be able to plan strategically, establish goals, effectively set priorities, and interact and work collaboratively with a broad range of people and groups.  

Candidates are also preferred to have experience in the following areas:

  • Practice of veterinary clinical, research or diagnostic service or extensive experience with higher education.
  • Involvement with equity, diversity, and inclusion, such as participation in related groups or activities, or completion of training modules or classes.
  • Demonstrated leadership and administrative accomplishments in positions of increasing responsibility.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the intellectual, professional, and personal development of a diverse student body.
  • A history of initiating innovative and effective programs or courses.
  • A history of working collaboratively with colleagues and diverse constituencies.
  • Direct responsibility in student services and/or counseling functions. This could include a broad range of experiences such as advising students or student organizations, crisis management, and policy development and implementation.

Experience in a tenured, tenure-track, or non-tenure-track position in a college or school of veterinary medicine is highly desired.
