Our Story

Our clinic began with a vision to provide personalized, high quality veterinary care that truly considers employees and clients partners in the veterinary process.  It is our belief that educating clients makes happier clients and healthier pets.  Dr. Denise Fortier and Dr. Michael Boyle founded our practice in 2004 with one clinic located in Greater Madison, Wisconsin with a belief that veterinary medicine should be compassionate and comprehensive yet provide a healthy, enriching work environment.  This belief has led to a growing practice which now includes 3 clinics in the greater Milwaukee and Madison areas (Oregon, WI, Menomonee Falls, WI, & Greenfield, WI).  Although it has grown, it's original beliefs still set the foundation of the practice.

The Details

If you are a veterinary student who is looking for an exceptional experience where you will be allowed to actually have hands-on experiences and be part of a team, consider an externship with us.  Our doctors truly enjoy having externs join us and explore veterinary medicine.  Externships can be from 2 to 4 weeks during the year or summer-long experiences.  A stipend is provided to assist in covering housing, food, and transportation.  Summer interns will be paid an hourly rate instead of a stipend.

The Position

Prior to the beginning of your experience, a veterinarian will talk one-on-one with you to discuss your goals for the experience.  A personalized plan will be developed to assist in the highest quality externship for you.  During the experience, weekly meetings will occur with a veterinarian mentor to adjust your plan and guide the externship.  A final written evaluation will be provided as needed by your veterinary school.

With a three clinic practice, there are ample opportunities to experience both urban and surburban medicine, high volume/lower volume practice, all encompassing medical and surgical cases, and cutting edge equipment.  Prior to COVID, our clinic had a very active client participation and education program including puppy parties, a kids Jr. Vet camp, client educational dinners, and open houses.  We hope to return to these services soon. We have started some online initiatives to fill the gap until returning to our in-person programs.  We also have an active staff development program believing that keeping staff educated and energized leads to a more cohesive and fulfilled team.

Your schedule will include 40 hours Mondays through Saturdays during business hours only.  The practice does not hospitalize patients overnight or treat after hours cases.  Your professionalism, conduct, and presentation is expected to comply with our employee standards outlined in our employee handbook.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled in an accredited DVM program.
  • You are authorized to work in the United States.
  • You must carry professional liability insurance. AVMA PLIT liability insurance is free for all student members of the AVMA. You may apply for this coverage on their website. Please plan to submit a certificate of coverage prior to your first day of externship.  You will not be able to participate nor receive any stipend until this is received.

NOTES:
10 openings.

Additional Salary Information: Stipend is intended to assist in covering transportation, housing, food, etc for 2 to 4 week externships. Greater than 4 week externships (summer) will be paid $16.54 per hour.
