Job Description:

VCA Veterinary Care Animal Hospital & Referral Center (or VCA VetCare, to our friends) is looking to add a few great emergency/critical care staff doctors to our team!

The ideal "you" would have internship training or equivalent experience as an ECC doctor, as well as a deep knowledge of emergency and critical care medicine and the skill set to match. It is also very important to us that anybody who join our staff be...

  • Ready and willing to function as part of a team

  • Committed to self-improvement, personally and professionally

  • Flexible, in terms of scheduling availability and in terms taking what the day gives you

  • Receptive to new responsibilities and different approaches

  • Kind, respectful, food-motivated, and possessing an excellent sense of humor

We're looking for folks who are willing to work day, swing, and/or overnight shifts, and we will offer compensation that is competitive with any area of the country.

Why should you choose VetCare?

Our location

We are located in beautiful (and, honestly, HIGHLY underrated) Albuquerque, New Mexico. Since it's located in the high desert- about 5,300' above sea level- we get four distinctly wonderful seasons, and the climate is dry, sunny, and extremely temperate compared with other desert-type cities. Anywhere in the area, you're moments away from great outdoor recreation (mountain biking, skiing/snowboarding, hiking, rock climbing...), tons of family activities (a zoo, an aquarium, so many museums), as well as amazing food and drinks. Every October, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta attracts balloonists and spectators from all over the world for a visual spectacle and experience unlike anything else. Less well-known, but even more special: northern New Mexico, much like southern Louisiana, has its own distinct and wonderful culture, including unique cuisine and artwork- come learn more about it!

Our team

VetCare is a hybrid hospital, meaning we offer both specialty and primary care services. Talking with your patient's primary veterinarian can be as easy as walking down the hall or waving across the office- no phone calls or emails necessary. Aside from internal medicine, VetCare has boarded specialists in emergency and critical care, oncology, ophthalmology, and surgery. On the support staff side, we have an experienced patient care team, a phenomenal client service team, and the best referral management department in the country (we don't know what we'd do without them). Love teaching? Our rotating internship program offers you the opportunity to work with a new group of young veterinarians every year.

Our ECC department!

The mission of the VetCare ECC team: provide high-level veterinary care, 24/7, to the most critically ill pets in the state. To carry out this mission, we have a tight-knit, highly-skilled team of senior ECC clinicians and nursing staff. The department is led by Christa Bernhard, our hospital's emergency and critical care specialist, and the only board-certified criticalist in New Mexico. In addition to our own patients, we also help care for pets being treated by our surgery, ophthalmology, oncology, and internal medicine services. It's a huge responsibility, but we wouldn't have it any other way.

Our community

As the only multi-specialty/ECC hospital in New Mexico, VetCare is often the sole option for local primary care doctors. We take that responsibility extremely seriously, so we strive to maintain healthy and trusting two-way relationships with all of our referral partners. Most important is our day-in, day-out commitment to picking up the phone or answering an email any time we get a question. Slightly less critical, but still significant: every year, we offer a highly-regarded multi-day CE event, the Four Corners Veterinary Symposium. It's usually attended by 600-700 members of the veterinary community. Many are local, but we generally expect folks from 11 states- all around the Southwest and even further. We are extremely proud that proceeds from our registration fees every year are donated to a local charity organization.

Our hospital

VCA VetCare is a 22,000 square foot facility with a centrally-located ICU and separate entrances, lobbies, and exam rooms for our primary care and referral services. Our hospital is AAHA-accredited, and we are an AAFP Gold Cat-Friendly Practice. There are private doctors' offices and separate treatment areas for ECC, specialty services, and primary care. We have dedicated suites for ultrasound, endoscopy, specialty surgery, oncology (including a chemo hood), primary care procedures, and I-131 treatment. We also offer state-of-the-art equipment for imaging (soon to include a 128-slice CT scanner), endoscopy, traditional and minimally-invasive surgery, and patient monitoring.

Our company

As a member of the VCA family, your passion for medicine and compassion for pets and people is matched with a commitment to your professional growth.  Among the reasons to consider joining VCA are:

  • Network of 4,500+ doctors, including more than 600 specialists.

  • Largest provider of private practice internships and residencies in the U.S.

  • WOOF University, offering abundant CE for doctors and staff.

  • Robust clinical studies program.

  • Opportunities to give back through strong shelter partnerships and VCA Charities.

We offer competitive compensation and great benefits for eligible employees, including medical/dental/vision, paid vacation, paid sick time, short term/long term disability, generous personal pet care discounts, 401k, and more!
