Seeking Small Animal, Avian and Exotic Veterinarian
Niles Animal Hospital and Bird Medical Center
About Niles Animal Hospital and Bird Medical Center
Niles Animal Hospital was established by Dr. T. J. Lafeber Jr. in 1949 as a hospital that not only sees dogs and cats but specializes in avian, exotic and wildlife medicine. Dr. Lafeber was considered one of the most leading authorities on bird care, he developed a product line of food, treats and supplements to give proper bird nutrition. He was a pioneer in setting an in-house diagnostic lab, enabling us to quickly generate laboratory results for ill patients.
Niles Animal Hospital achieved accreditation from the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) in 1953 and has remained accredited since then.
Dr. Peter S. Sakas purchased the hospital from Dr. Lafeber in 1985 upon his retirement. Dr. Sakas continued to specialize and teach avian and wildlife medicine. He worked with and trained many of the avian veterinarians here in the Chicagoland area. In March 2020, we tragically lost Dr. Sakas. He has been a mentor to many veterinarians though the years and we are lucky to have Dr. Jamie Abete carry on his legacy. She is dedicated to continuing the same level of care and will continue to specialize not only in dog/cat medicine but avian, exotic and wildlife medicine.
