The Spay Neuter Project of Los Angeles (SNPLA) provides nonprofit, expert veterinary care to 30,000 pets each year at our 3 stationary community animal medicine clinics and mobile veterinary clinic that operate in underserved areas of Los Angeles. We act as a safety net for cats and dogs whose families are experiencing barriers to care. SNPLA’s mission is to ensure every pet receives high quality veterinary care regardless of their family’s financial circumstances. Who you are:

The HQHVSN Veterinarian is a trained and licensed full-time veterinarian responsible for providing high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) care to pet dogs and cats in the Los Angeles region. SNPLA’s Community Animal Medicine Project focuses on high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) and preventative medicine for cats and dogs. We are currently seeking experienced HQHVSN surgeons to work surgery days at our Mission Hills, CA, stationary clinic. Have small animal experience but not HQHVSN? We have a Veterinarian Training Program available for you to train with us in high quality, high volume surgical and clinical techniques needed to build a strong surgical skillset.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Medical (75%)

  • Provide high quality, compassionate, preventative medical care to patients in underserved areas of Los Angeles, overseeing all aspects of veterinary care during a clinic day including physical examination, surgery, and discharge information.
  • Perform pre-surgery physical examinations on all surgical candidates.
  • Perform 25 – 35 high quality, high volume spay/neuter surgical procedures per spay/neuter clinic day
  • Diagnose and treat post-surgical complications of outpatient animals.
  • Refer and triage cases that do not fall within the Community Animal Medicine Project parameters of care as appropriate. 

Customer Service (15%)

  • Communicate respectfully with clients, relaying critical medical information about patients. Discuss examination and medical test results with owners in order to allow owners to make informed choices about the medical care of their pets.
  • Provide discharge instructions for patients and oversee the dispensing of medications.

Administrative/Other (10%)

  • Document all exam findings, test results and treatment recommendations on medical record form.
  • Follow written and verbally communicated SNPLA Standard Operating Procedures
  • Attend staff meetings, doctor meetings and other requested meetings
  • Support a culture of respect, belonging and teamwork through regular 1:1s
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent
  • Current California Veterinary License
  • Background in small animal medicine and surgery

Maintain good working relationship with clients and staff utilizing excellent interpersonal skills, be a team leader as well as a team player, Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office and ability to view online calendar, Excellent work attendance record, Fluency in English required, bilingual in Spanish or other language a plus, Interest in animal welfare and increasing accessibility to underserved populations, Thrives when working independently as well as part of team in fast-paced clinic environment, Flexibility and willingness to occasionally work beyond the scheduled end of the work day
