The Veterinary Nursing Program in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University invites applications from outstanding individuals for the position of Assistant Professor in the Health Programs (HP) appointment system with a dual appointment in the Veterinary Nursing Program and the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences (SCS). The College of Veterinary Medicine offers an Accredited Veterinary Nursing Program with two degree options, including a Certificate of Completion in Veterinary Nursing and a Bachelor of Science degree in Veterinary Nursing, as well as DVM, graduate, and residency training programs. The Assistant Professor will deliver didactic and laboratory educational information to Veterinary Nursing and DVM students to meet guidelines set by the American Veterinary Medical Association. In addition, the successful applicant will join a team of full-time primary care faculty, two licensed veterinary technicians, and a veterinary assistant devoted to the primary care service in the Veterinary Medical Center. Veterinary Medical Center faculty also include specialists in surgery, internal medicine, diagnostic imaging, emergency and critical care medicine, cardiology, neurology, dermatology, ophthalmology, medical and radiation oncology, sports medicine and rehabilitation, and anesthesia.

This position will be responsible for teaching and continuous improvement of didactic and laboratory courses, and will include the development of educational support materials to facilitate online and hybridization of assigned courses in the Veterinary Nursing and DVM programs. The duties of the successful applicant will also include participation in the service missions of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Considerable effort will be devoted to clinical service and instruction. The position involves extensive instruction of veterinary and veterinary nursing students in a teaching-hospital setting, surgical supervision of veterinary students in both a traditional hospital setting and an outreach shelter environment, and training of veterinary interns assigned to the Primary Care Service. The instructional model utilizes direct and experiential learning for preclinical and clinical veterinary and veterinary nursing students. The goals are to emphasize critical thinking, increase student autonomy, and provide hands-on experience under direct veterinary and veterinary nurse supervision, aiming for a model of excellence in companion animal first opinion and preventative care.
