Assistant/Associate/Full Professor, Emergency and Critical Care

The Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Georgia, invites applications for two clinical (non-tenure) track, tenure track, or tenured faculty positions in veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) at the rank of assistant, associate, or full professor. Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree, should have completed or be in the process of completing an approved residency of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, and have board certification or be eligible for board certification. For all candidates, salary and entry rank will be commensurate with the applicant’s experience and qualifications.

Requirements for appointment for Clinical Assistant, Associate, and Full Professors (non-tenure track) can be found in the Guidelines for Appointment and Promotion of Non-tenure Track Clinical Faculty in the Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery: https://provost.uga.edu/_resources/‌documents/‌SAMS_‌‌Guidelines_non-tenure_track_Modified_‌Oct_31_2012.pdf.

Requirements for appointment for Assistant, Associate, and Full Professors (tenure track or tenured) can be found in the Guidelines for Faculty Development in the Department of Small Animal Medicine, https://provost.uga.edu/_resources/documents/Small_Animal_Medicine_and_Surgery_2015.pdf. To be eligible for tenure upon appointment, candidates must be appointed as an associate or full professor, have achieved tenure at a prior institution, and bring a demonstrable national reputation to the institution. Candidates must be approved for tenure upon appointment before hire.

The major responsibilities of this position will be to teach and provide service in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, to teach pre-clinical didactic and laboratory courses in ECC to veterinary students, to actively participate in the training of ECC and non-ECC house officers, and to develop a research program, which can be independent or collaborative. Proportionate assignments for each area are based on the interests of the candidate, faculty assignment, and the missions of the ECC program and Department.

The successful candidate will join three board-certified emergency and critical care specialists and technical staff dedicated to the ECC in support of the University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching Hospital, a 300,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility. The program currently trains eight residents and two specialty interns. The ECC service also provides support to the 10 rotating small animal interns during rotations on the emergency service. Faculty members enjoy a diverse caseload with ongoing clinical and benchtop research projects, extensive collaborations with other services, and opportunities to teach students and house officers. Laboratory space and core facilities are available to support basic and clinical research. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collegially are required.

The ECC service is outfitted with a Respironics/Philips Esprit mechanical ventilator, high-flow oxygen therapy, SonoSite ultrasound machine, Draeger Infinity wireless telemetry, and other advanced technologies that support critical care. The ICU is open and there is an excellent working relationship among all hospital services. ECC has a dedicated stat lab with a NOVA biomedical blood-gas/electrolyte monitor, HESKA CBC machine, access to Abaxis chemistry and coagulation analyzers, and a hospital blood bank, which ECC manages. Emergency imaging includes an ECC dedicated ultrasound machine, digital radiography, and a rapid 64-slice CT scanner, which allows advanced pulmonary imaging and sedated exams. A dedicated interventional radiology suite and 3T MRI are available. Faculty members’ offices and over 5,400 square feet of shared research space are located on the floor above the hospital.

The Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery consists of 47 faculty members, 51 clinical residents, 10 rotating interns, 7 specialty interns, and 3 administrative staff members. Shared laboratory space and technical support are provided within the Department, and there are 7 dedicated research technicians who assist in the research missions of the Department’s faculty. Other specialties within the Department include anesthesia, dermatology, internal medicine, neurology, medical and radiation oncology, ophthalmology, soft tissue surgery, orthopedic surgery, nutrition, radiology, and zoological medicine, as well as a community practice program (UGA Pet Health Center). The Department participates in the college-wide M.S. and Ph.D. programs. Members of the Department also actively participate in highly successful collaborative efforts with faculty members from other departments within the college and other colleges on campus, including the College of Public Health, College of Engineering, and the Athens campus of the Medical College of Georgia. The Department has a strong track record for teaching, research, and clinical service.
