Assistant Professor- Small Animal Behavioral Medicine

The Ohio State University

Columbus, Ohio

Department:

Veterinary Medicine | Veterinary Clinical Sciences

The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for an open (tenure/clinical track) faculty position in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences for a position in Small Animal Behavioral Medicine (SABM).

Position Overview

The SABM Service is located within the comprehensive Veterinary Medical Center with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment including on-site computed tomography, a 3 Tesla MRI, nuclear medicine, an interventional radiology suite, and 24-7 small animal emergency & critical care. The OSU VMC has a dedicated SABM space which includes three state-of-the-art exams rooms. The larger of the three rooms includes 200+ square feet of open space with comfortable and moveable seating for both clients and staff. A separate, quiet entrance with direct access to a parking lot allows clients to park in a low-traffic area and bring their pets into the building without encountering other clients, staff members, or pets.

Teaching responsibilities will include didactic lectures, hands-on laboratories, and clinical teaching of small animal behavioral medicine and related topics to students, interns, residents, and graduate students. The candidate is expected to foster a broad and diverse caseload in behavioral medicine through the delivery of efficient and effective service to clients and referring private practitioners through the provision of high-quality patient care. Faculty are also expected to be involved in professional and community outreach, continuing education, committee service, and curriculum development. Our teaching facilities include the Veterinary Clinical and Professional Skills Center, a state-of-the-art education and assessment resource. The center includes almost 9,000 square feet of educational space, including a large open lab, seven flexible skills labs and communications rooms, and a devoted 3D printing space.

Candidates will be given off-clinic for teaching and scholarly activity related to small animal behavior and animal handling. Some collaborative research is expected with clinical track appointments.

Faculty are encouraged to develop collaborative endeavors with clinicians and scientists within the College and across the University, particularly those related to the College’s Signature Programs. Excellent collaborative opportunities are available in the Departments of Veterinary Biosciences and Veterinary Preventive Medicine within the College as well as other units across the University campus, including the comprehensive OSU Health Sciences Center, which is within walking distance of the College. The College of Medicine (http://medicine.osu.edu), The College of Social Work (https://csw.osu.edu/), and College of Pharmacy (www.pharmacy.ohio-state.edu) are a just a few of the resources available to clinicians and research scientists interested in Small Animal Behavioral Medicine and related fields. Additionally, collaborative opportunities exist at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (http://www.nationwidechildrens.org).

The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences supports a faculty of over 70 clinical specialists, educators, and investigators along with extensive training programs for professional students, interns, residents, and graduate students. The College of Veterinary Medicine (www.vet.osu.edu) is ranked 4th among North American colleges of veterinary medicine by US News and World Report.

Collegiality, civility, mutual support, and respect for others are strongly held values in the College of Veterinary Medicine. We support diverse beliefs and the free exchange of ideas and expect that faculty, staff, and students promote these values and apply them in a professional manner in all academic endeavors. The appointee should have excellent communication skills and an ability to work cooperatively with other faculty and staff. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience. The start date is negotiable, and applications will be reviewed beginning immediately and continue until the position is filled. Additional information regarding faculty appointments, promotion and tenure in the department and departmental governance can be found at http://vet.osu.edu/clinical-sciences/departmental-administration.

Candidate Qualifications/Attributes

Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree and be able to hold a license in the state of Ohio (http://www.ovmlb.ohio.gov/vets.stm). Specialty board certification (DACVB) is preferred, but candidates who have completed small animal behavior residency training and are eligible to sit for specialty examination will also be considered. An advanced degree (MS/PhD) or equivalent research experience is desirable. The appointee will become the second faculty member in the SABM service, along with two residents, one registered veterinary technician, and one IAABC behavior modification specialist. This position includes clinical duties including teaching students and residents on clinical rotation, didactic and laboratory teaching, research support and outreach in line with OSU’s land-grant institution mission.
