Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree, have completed or be in the process of completing a residency registered with the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) or the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS), and have board certification or be in the process of attaining board certification through the ACVS or the ECVS.  For all candidates, salary and entry rank will be commensurate with the applicant’s experience and qualifications.
Requirements for appointment for Clinical Assistant, Associate, and Full Professors (non-tenure track) can be found in the Guidelines for Appointment and Promotion of Non-tenure Track Clinical Faculty in the Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery: https://provost.uga.edu/_resources/documents/SAMS_Guidelines_non-tenure_track_Modified_Oct_31_2012.pdf.
Requirements for appointment for Assistant, Associate, and Full Professors (tenure track or tenured) can be found in the Guidelines for Faculty Development in the Department of Small Animal Medicine, https://provost.uga.edu/_resources/documents/Small_Animal_Medicine_and_Surgery_2015.pdf. To be eligible for tenure upon appointment, candidates must be appointed as an associate or full professor, have achieved tenure at a prior institution, and bring a demonstrable national reputation to the institution. Candidates must be approved for tenure upon appointment before hire.
The major responsibilities for this position are to teach and provide service in orthopedics in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, teach didactic and laboratory courses in orthopedics to veterinary students, actively participate in training of surgical residents, and to develop a research program, which can be independent and/or collaborative with other faculty members. Proportionate assignments for each area will be based on the interests of the candidate in conjunction with the missions of the Surgery program and the Department.
The service enjoys access to vanguard technology in diagnostic imaging, including a 64-slice CT scanner, 3.0 Tesla MRI, digital radiography, ultrasound, nuclear scintigraphy, and a dedicated interventional radiology suite. The Veterinary Teaching Hospital is a 300,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility opened in March 2015. Each specialty has its own dedicated rounds room. Faculty members’ offices and over 5,400 square feet of shared research space are located on the floor above the hospital.
The successful candidate will join two board-certified surgeons and technical staff. Faculty members enjoy a diverse caseload with ongoing clinical and benchtop research projects, extensive collaborations with other services, and opportunities to teach students and house officers. Laboratory space and core facilities are available to support basic and clinical research. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collegially are required.
The Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery consists of 47 faculty members, 51 clinical residents, 10 rotating interns, 7 specialty interns, and 3 administrative staff members. Shared laboratory space and technical support are provided within the Department, and there are 7 dedicated research technicians who assist in the research missions of the Department’s faculty. Other specialties within the Department include anesthesia, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, medical and radiation oncology, neurology, nutrition, ophthalmology, soft tissue surgery, and zoological medicine, as well as a community practice program (UGA Pet Health Center). The Department participates in the college-wide M.S. and Ph.D. programs. Members of the Department also actively participate in highly
successful collaborative efforts with faculty members from other departments within the college and other colleges on campus, including the College of Public Health, College of Engineering, and the Athens campus of the Medical College of Georgia. The Department has a strong track record for teaching, research, and clinical service.
