Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University is seeking a chair for its newly formed Department of Ambulatory Medicine and Theriogenology (formerly the Department of Environmental and Population Health). The department is committed to excellence in its education, scholarly activity, and clinical missions. Carrying out its mission are 11 faculty and 7 staff members. Faculty members teach farm animal medicine, surgery, and reproduction across the DVM curriculum and equine, bovine, small ruminant, and companion farm animal ambulatory medicine and theriogenology in the clinical year.

The department’s current and developing areas of expertise include ambulatory large animal medicine and surgery, dairy and small ruminant production medicine, theriogenology, farm animal welfare, equine medicine and dentistry, and farm companion animal medicine.

The department operates Tufts Veterinary Field Service (TVFS), which provides clinical service in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. TVFS cares for approximately 55,000 animals per year. It provides regular herd health services to 35 dairies, ranging in size from 50 to 2,500 cows. TVFS has approximately 2,000 bovine calls a year (>50,000 animals), 1,500 equine calls (2500 animals), 750 small ruminant calls (2700 animals), and 200 camelid and swine calls.  It offers advanced reproductive technologies including bovine and small ruminant embryo collection and transfer, laparoscopic AI, semen freezing, and equine reproductive services. There is a haul-in area for advanced care on-site in Woodstock, CT. Referral to and support from the Hospital for Large Animals in North Grafton is available.

The chair, reporting directly to the dean, will be responsible for leading an inclusive strategic vision for the future growth of the department. They are also expected to support the professional development of faculty and staff and to foster collaborative research and education within the department and across the school. The chair is responsible for the department budget and administrative affairs, supervises the director of Tufts Veterinary Field Service, and works collaboratively with colleagues and senior leadership at the school and university level. Time devoted to clinical, research/scholarly activities and teaching will be determined based on the interests and experience of the candidate. For more information, see Guidelines for Appointment of Cummings Department Chairs.

Candidates must possess a DVM, or equivalent degree and have an academic and clinical background that aligns with the strengths of the department. Board certification in a relevant field or an advanced degree is considered an asset. Demonstrated leadership experience in an appropriate environment is required. An understanding of the academic environment, particularly as it pertains to ambulatory medicine, is highly valued. The successful applicant will have administrative and management skills, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a record of scholarly activities.  The demonstrated ability to mentor faculty, house officers, and DVM students and build a collegial team atmosphere is essential. Experience in supporting diversity and inclusion is important. Academic rank, at either an associate or full professor in one of our professorial tracks, and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position will be eligible for appointment with continuous term (tenure equivalent).

The application deadline is September 1, 2022.  Review Candidates should submit a curriculum vitae and a cover letter describing their qualifications, clinical and academic experience, relevant leadership and administrative experience, and interest in the position. Please address your strengths and experiences in diversity and inclusion as it relates to leadership, teaching, research, and/or service in your cover letter. The names and contact information for five references should be provided. They will only be contacted with your permission.  Application materials should be submitted electronically through Interfolio (http://apply.interfolio.com/109340). The start date is negotiable, but a date early in 2023 is preferred. Please direct any questions regarding the position directly to the dean, Dr. Alastair Cribb, c/o stephen.libuda@tufts.edu.

The main campus of Cummings School is situated in Grafton, MA on a 600-acre pastoral campus, forty-five minutes west of Boston and next door to Worcester, the second largest city in Massachusetts.  This is the site of teaching for the first three years of the program. The Department of Ambulatory Medicine and Theriogenology is based 35 miles away in Woodstock, CT. Both locations are a short drive from beautiful beaches, mountains, and other unique features of New England. The area is a hub of biotechnology and higher education. The K-12 education system is excellent. Housing is readily available close to either campus or in any number of surrounding towns.
