The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national not-for-profit association established in 1863 & representing over 100,000 veterinarians working in private & corporate practice, government, industry, academia, & uniformed services, is seeking an Executive Director/Director of Development to join our team to lead AVMA’s charitable arm – the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF). 

Established in 1963 and headquartered in Schaumburg, IL, a northwest suburb of Chicago, the AVMF is a thriving Foundation dedicated to increasing charitable resources for the support of the veterinary profession and those that love and care for animals and has strategically positioned itself as a national charitable resource and priority for the support of the veterinary profession, veterinary students, and the care of animals.

Reporting directly to AVMA’s CEO, the Executive Director will oversee all aspects of the Foundation including board relations, strategy, management and execution of fundraising, development, and grant administration, as well as annual giving efforts. They will also provide leadership to the Foundation by strategically engaging the AVMF Board of Directors to establish long-term goals, strategies and plans; and implementing policies designed to strengthen the partnership between the AVMA and AVMF, achieve AVMF’s development goals, and maximize the effectiveness of the AVMF’s programs and staff.

To be successful in this role, you must be highly collaborative and passionate about AVMF’s mission, additional qualifications include:

  • BS/BA degree required, MS degree or credentialing in not-for-profit or fundraising management preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related not-for-profit experience with responsibility for staff management, major gift prospecting and fundraising, financial management, and board relations; with demonstrated success and knowledge of foundation/association management and best practices are required.
  • Must be a strong leader and excellent negotiator, skilled at gaining consensus among diverse groups, with a strong interest in the advancement of the veterinary profession and in the well-being of animals.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, facilitation skills, listening skills, and public speaking skills are required.
  • Experience with the development and implementation of strategic plans related to fundraising activities and securing financial support from a variety of sources; with the ability to prospect, cultivate, steward and manage new and existing donors.
  • An energetic, forward-thinking and creative individual with high ethical standards and an appropriate professional image with the ability to work with and effectively communicate with diverse individuals in both the scientific and non-scientific communities.
  • Ability to effectively manage and motivate staff to advance the mission of the organization.
  • Must exhibit AVMA’s commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the execution of duties.
  • Approximately 30% travel
