GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Department of Health, Communicable Disease Service has an opportunity for a veterinarian with the necessary

education, training, and experience to be the New Jersey Deputy State Public Health Veterinarian.

The selected applicant shall assist the NJ State Public Health Veterinarian with supervising The Office of Veterinary

Public Health (VPH). This Office provides technical assistance and training to municipal governments, local health

departments and animal facility operators with regard to animal facility inspections, investigations, complaints, violation

enforcement and court testimony. VPH approves Animal Control Officer training courses, certifies individuals who have

satisfactorily completed the approved training courses and revokes certificates from individuals who commit acts of

cruelty or other malfeasance and can no longer work in the capacity of an animal control officer. This unit operates a

low-cost spay and neuter program, processes dog licensing revenue, and oversees the State-sponsored rabies vaccination clinic program.

The applicant shall assist the State Public Health Veterinarian with management duties of the Zoonotic Unit and manage the Unit

when the State Public Health Veterinarian is out of the office.

The applicant shall mobilize when the State Incident Command System activates Emergency Support Function 8 (Public

Health and Medical Services), Once mobilized, VPH will assist with temporary housing of dogs, cats, and other domestic

animals owned by people who have been evacuated and are displaced from their homes. VPH assists with animal

evacuation response groups to establish temporary animal shelters during emergencies and works closely with the New

Jersey Department of Agriculture to ensure for the safety of evacuated pets and maintain sanitation in temporary animal

shelters to prevent disease transmission.

The applicant will assist the Zoonotic Epidemiologist as assigned by State Public Health Veterinarian with surveillance

of, and the response to, zoonotic disease reports and outbreaks. The applicant will assist in education and prevention of rabies, and work with local health departments to investigate potential rabies exposures. If assigned, the applicant shall report findings and collaborate with internal and external partners, complete reports on the incident and prepare reports, posters, or presentation for publication on zoonotic disease topics.

The applicant shall assist the Zoonotic Epidemiologist with notifications from New Jersey laboratories regarding isolates

of suspected zoonotic select agents, such as brucellosis, burkholderia, and tularemia. The applicant shall follow the

established protocols for delivery and testing of select agents and initiate investigations to identify person exposed and

make recommendations for prophylaxis, monitoring and surveillance.

The preferred candidate will posses a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree and will have at least one year of supervisory experience, strong interpersonal skills, experience in applied epidemiology, and/or experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team. The ideal candidate will have experience and interest in the field of veterinary shelter medicine, and/or experience in communicable disease prevention and investigation.

 

 

REQUIREMENTS (EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSES)

EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in a discipline appropriate to the position.

EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of full-time experience in a field appropriate to the position.

NOTE: A Doctorate in a discipline appropriate to the position may be substituted for two (2) years of experience indicated above.

LICENSE: Appointees will be required to possess a valid driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essentials duties of the position.
