You will be able to focus on providing each animal with their appropriate outcome, and never have to euthanize for time or space. 

At least 1 year experience in Shelter/ High-Volume setting is preferred, but we are happy to provide mentorship for the right new grad.

$98,000-$112,900 annual salary DOE

Work Schedule

• Position includes weekday, weekend and holiday hours requiring a flexible work schedule depending on needs.
• Hours and days are subject to change based on department demands.

Under the direction of the Medical Director in all activities and responsibilities, Resource Center Veterinarian provides medical care to patients in the shelter and high quality, high volume spay/neuter clinic.

Primary Responsibilities

• Practice veterinary medicine within a high volume shelter setting, striving to provide the best possible care on both a herd health and individual level while being mindful of limited resources at the same time.
• Examinations of HSU shelter animals and all care needed to prepare those animals for adoption.
• Provide emergency care for shelter animals on-site or on-call.
• Provide high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter for shelter and owned animals.
• Perform soft tissue surgeries as needed for shelter animals.
• Perform dental procedures on shelter animals.
• Assist in the establishment and maintenance of procedures and protocols such as disease control, intake, and quarantine.
• Perform euthanasia when needed.
• Coordinate, when needed, specialized surgeries and consultations with outside veterinarians.
• Ensure that all state and federal laws, state regulations, and accepted standards regarding clinic operations, the practice of veterinary medicine, drug control, and animal care and handling are adhered to.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of shelter animal health protocols, surgical procedures and companion animal health issues.
• Build effective relationships through positive interaction and communication with the community, volunteers and staff.
• Attend all staff meetings and training sessions.
• Advocate the humane treatment of animals and be able to transmit these values to others.
• Always strive to work with the 5 freedoms of animal welfare in mind:
• Freedom from hunger or thirst by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigor.
• Freedom from discomfort by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.
• Freedom from pain, injury or disease by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.
• Freedom to express (most) normal behavior by providing sufficient space, proper facilities, and company of the animal's own kind.
• Freedom from fear and distress by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering. 

• Provide the Resource Center staff with ongoing supervision, mentoring, and continuing education so that they are able to properly and skillfully complete their job requirements.
• Treat all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion at all times, regardless of the situation or circumstance; promote a humane and caring attitude toward all animals at all times.
• Maintain positive relationships with co-workers, managers, executive staff, community pet owners, adopters, and other stakeholders.
• Cheerfully acknowledge the presence of customers in all public areas, and interact with the public in a polite, professional, nonjudgmental manner at all times.
• Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or Medical Director.

Required Skills/Qualifications

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited college or university and one year of professional veterinary medical experience.
• Possession of a current license to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Utah.
• An interest in and willingness to support the mission, vision, and philosophy of the Humane Society of Utah (HSU).
• Ability to operate, maneuver and/or provide simple but continuous adjustments on equipment such as surgical instruments, syringes, microscopes, diagnostic equipment, computer terminal, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
• Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs in performing movements requiring skill and training, such as performing surgery and giving injections.
• Vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with the public, fellow employees, and volunteers.
• Proficiency in Excel, Gmail, Google Sheets/Docs, and other computer skills that include the ability to prepare reports and maintain an efficient records system. Experience with Shelterluv (shelter management database system) preferred.
• At least one year of experience working in a shelter or other high-volume setting is preferred.
• Knowledge of:
• Best practices in the shelter medical field.
• Common diseases of shelter animals, including symptoms and care.
• Recordkeeping methods and office procedures.
• Safe and efficient handling of small animals.
• Characteristics of animal behavior.
• Principles of supervision, training, and work coordination.
• Overseeing a medical support staff.
• Skills:
• Meticulous and methodical attention to recordkeeping and reporting.
• Skilled in conflict resolution.
• Efficiency and ability to practice high-quality veterinary medicine for a high caseload of patients.
• Efficiency and competency working in a high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter setting (cats, dogs, and rabbits).
• Effective time management skills and ability to thrive in a high-volume, high-stress environment.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

• Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb and manipulate (lift, carry, move) up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying temperatures and climates.
• Ability to work with animals of varying temperaments in noisy conditions.
• Ability to work with cleaning materials.
• Ability to use strength and agility while working with active animals.
• Responsible for presenting a neat and professional appearance to the public at all times.
