Description

The Department of Infectious Disease and Global Health (IDGH) in Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University (https://vet.tufts.edu/infectious-disease-global-health) invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor of microbiology of infectious disease. The successful candidate will help promote a team approach to problem solving through their scientific research, teaching, and service as a part of a strong faculty whose research interests span bacterial, viral, and parasite medicine in both animals and humans. Candidates should bring microbiology research expertise that builds on core strengths in the department and the school more broadly, and that intersects and complements departmental themes in infectious disease and global health, including wildlife medicine. For this position, we particularly seek candidates who use innovative approaches to investigate molecular, cellular, and/or organismal topics in the field of infectious disease microbiology.

IDGH faculty research strengths in infectious disease include disease ecology and evolution including viral and tick-borne disease as well as wildlife studies, development of research models, neglected tropical disease, and vaccine and therapeutic development. Tufts University is home to a variety of strong core facilities and specialized resources are available for infectious disease research at Cummings School including flow cytometry, the New England Regional Biosafety Laboratory - a BSL-3 biocontainment research space (http://vetsites.tufts.edu/ne-rbl/), and the newly established comparative pathology and genomics shared resource. The very busy clinical hospitals and diagnostic lab are further resources for material samples and project collaboration.

The successful candidate is expected to establish a leading, extramurally funded research program centered around basic and translational science. As part of an experimental laboratory the research program may include field and computational components and should mentor and train graduate, professional and postdoctoral students at Cummings School. This faculty will also direct a core DVM program course in Veterinary Infectious Disease and participate in teaching of other graduate program courses.

Qualifications

A PhD, DVM, or equivalent doctoral degree and record of productive research and grant writing skill is required in addition to a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other scientists. The ideal candidate is a DVM/PhD with substantial expertise and interest in teaching/directing a microbiology/infectious disease DVM degree course and participating in other graduate degree courses taught on campus. Salary and academic rank will be commensurate with experience and productivity of the candidate and includes a strong benefits package. We offer start-up support and a highly collaborative environment offering opportunities for both basic and translational research.

Application Instructions

Application review will begin February 28th, 2023 and continue until the position is filled. The position start date is negotiable, but a start date of August 1, 2023, or earlier is preferred. Candidates should submit a curriculum vitae; cover letter describing their qualifications, research and scholarly interests, and reasons for applying for the position; statement of research interest; and the names, addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of three references. Statements of research interest should be limited to 3 pages and articulate key scientific questions, succinctly convey their importance to the field and to the broader community, and relay innovative ideas and approaches that promise to advance the challenging questions posed. Please address your strengths and experiences in diversity and inclusion as it relates to teaching, research, and/or service in your cover letter.

Application materials should be submitted electronically through Interfolio (https://apply.interfolio.com/120768).  Please direct any questions to department chair Dr. Jonathan Runstadler at jonathan.runstadler@tufts.edu.
