The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences of the University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a full-time, clinical-track or tenure-track faculty at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in ophthalmology. The successful candidate will have expertise in ophthalmology practice in multiple species and a passion for teaching.  Requirements for the applicant include the DVM/ or equivalent degree, completion of an ophthalmology residency, and board certification or board eligibility in the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. The candidate should have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively with all of the sections in the hospital.

Responsibilities will include clinical, didactic and laboratory teaching of ophthalmology to professional students, interns, and residents at the university, and participation in continuing education. Participation in clinical or basic research is encouraged. The successful candidate will be expected to add to the department’s reputation by participation in the teaching, service, and research programs of the College. Start-up funds are available to help develop clinical skills and research competence.

The University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center is a modern, fully equipped facility and is equipped with extensive therapeutic and diagnostic equipment including a state-of-the-art operating microscope; phacoemulsification unit; diode and CO2 lasers; cryosurgical units; electrodiagnostic and ultrasonography equipment, and a 1.5T MRI and 40-slice helical CT. The ophthalmology service is supported by 2 other board-certified ophthalmologists, 2 residents and 2 licensed veterinary technicians. The ophthalmology caseload is high volume and diverse.  In addition to dogs and cats, horses, farm animals, exotic pets, and wildlife; animals from the Knoxville Zoological Gardens, Ripley’s Aquarium and the Great Smoky Mountain National Park are also seen. The department includes tenure and clinical track faculty, including board-certified specialists in anesthesiology, behavior, cardiology, dermatology, emergency/critical care, internal medicine, neurology, nutrition, dentistry, oncology, radiology, sports medicine, and soft tissue and orthopedic surgery.  The Veterinary Medical Center also has a social work program and pathologists with strong interests in comparative ophthalmology. Additionally, there is great support and camaraderie from the wildlife/exotics, equine and farm animal faculty for patient care.

Knoxville is home to the University of Tennessee flagship campus and is a beautiful and friendly place to live. It is a short drive from the Great Smoky Mountains, as well as a number of dog-friendly state parks and recreation areas. Outdoor recreational opportunities include, but are not limited to, hiking, biking, trail running, climbing and water sports. Knoxville has a vibrant cultural downtown with excellent restaurants; bustling farmer’s markets; live music of all genres, ballet, and theater; frequent art and cultural festivals; and men’s and women’s sporting events.
