Hospital Team Testimonials

“Working at Kalvig and Shorter (KSV), as a veterinarian, is perfect for anyone striving to practice excellent medicine, provide good care and work with a compassionate team.

KSV offers the best for his patients and loving owners. As a veterinarian, you know you can provide the best care for pets and build solid relationships with pet owners and colleagues.

The hospital also offers a family feel.

I enjoyed working there during many years. The hospital is a bustling place in the middle of Manhattan, but with a family feeling. You’ll get to know everyone well: staff, other doctors, patients and owners too.

While working at KSV I learned the value of good medicine, client relationships and a strong team work. I saw so many interesting cases - and patients always received excellent care. You know that a pet is in good care there. This was for me the most important aspect about working at KSV. Dr. Kalvig and Dr. Shorter’s knowledge and support are also a great asset and made the hospital very special.” - Dr. Elsa K. (Associate DVM)

"I love working at Kalvig & Shorter because of the friendly environment created by the work community, as well as the care and attention that the veterinarians and staff show both patients and clients. Drs. Kalvig and Shorter have such knowledge and respect for what they do. It has truly been such an inspiration and honor to work in their veterinary practice." - Emily B. (Veterinary Assistant/Receptionist/Pre-Vet Student)

"I worked at KSV the Spring before starting veterinary school. Dr. Kalvig and Dr. Shorter are excited to teach those with a desire to learn. I learned about the core vaccine schedules/why other vaccines may be recommended, dosing medication, normal and abnormal exam findings, the basics of routine surgery, positioning for radiographs/processing them, how/when to use laser therapy, and learned about effective client communications by witnessing the doctors and also by doing intake/discharges myself. Veterinary specialists often visited the clinic, and it was always interesting to see their work and to learn about the different avenues available in veterinary medicine. Not only was it fascinating to have this exposure as a pre-vet student, the knowledge I gained working at KSV has already helped me excel during my first year of veterinary school. It was also a great experience to see how a smaller, privately owned veterinary practice delivers quality care to their clients and their patients, which is something I hope to carry into my own career as a veterinarian." - Irina S. (KSV Veterinary Assistant/Extern, Current Veterinary Student)

“I am reviewing KSV as a client and half a decade employee at this establishment. Keep in mind, I have not worked in the veterinary field for a few years now, but have seen plenty of veterinary

establishments, and I have nothing to benefit from this review. I've worked with Dr Kalvig and Dr Shorter as a lead technician for many years and have seen first hand how they treat their clients and patients. They treat each and every patient with absolute care, tremendous in detail, and top quality medicine. They are straight forward with their diagnostics so they can find the root of each patient's ailment with no BS. I have seen them help patients dodge diseases by using quality preventative care all the way to helping animals when they are at the end stages of their life. Both doctors pay extremely close attention to detail. In fact, they pay so much attention to detail, it may spin their staff's head, but to put that all in perspective, the detail is what saves many animals' lives. Dr Shorter, as a surgeon, will probably be one of the best veterinary surgeons you'll ever come across. I've seen him, first hand, perform some of the toughest surgeries without breaking a sweat. His confidence and ability portrays in the work he provides. Lastly, you will not find the type of customer service quality they provide anywhere else. After many years working with them, I can't recall a specific time when they were truly not available if their staff or clients needed help. They are hard working doctors and treat all their clients with respect, care, and passion.

Dr Kalvig and Dr Shorter are truly kind and passionate doctors and human beings. We are all very lucky to have such great doctors in the veterinary field who also share our passion for animals. Needless to say, I used to bring my amazing orange cat to see them when he needed medical attention when he was still with me. I wouldn't bring my cat to anyone else cause I knew the doctors and staff would care for my cat like he was part of their family!”

- Gino W. (LVT, Former Lead technician, currently a Computer Sciences Professional)

“Drs. Kalvig and Shorter will always be more than my employers and great veterinarians, they were my friends. Every time I needed their help they gave it to me. I remember so many times of crisis with my dog, Lily…in the morning, the middle of the night, on a busy day…you were

always there for me. They treated me and my girl with the utmost respect and I have only the highest respect for both of them.

Not many people know Drs. Kalvig and Shorter as well as I do, but I want people to know how different and truly unique they are. When Lily was at death's door in June of 2009, they cleared their schedule for the morning and afternoon to give her a much needed surgery and they saved her life. Lily had 3 more years of life because of their dedication, intelligence, research, and numerous consultations with specialists, as well as their determination, compassion, and empathy. They give wonderful patient care and wonderful people care.

I could never work in a veterinary hospital ever again, (even though I loved it) because I have worked with the best and have high expectations. I miss everyone from KSV, but want everyone to know how deeply touching my experience was. I felt love every day there; from the practice, the clients, and the patients.” - Christina F. (Former Hospital Manager)

“I started taking my two Chocolate Labs to Kalvig & Shorter Veterinary Associates when the practice was on the Upper East Side of Manhattan over ten years ago. When they moved to their current location on East 39th Street in Murray Hill, I knew the over-50-block trip to visit the doctors and staff would be worth it. KSV provides the highest veterinary medical care in New York City. I was truly honored when they hired me in a Client Relations capacity a few years back, solidifying my membership in the KSV Family!” - Adrienne G. (Long term loyal client, KSV Client Relations)

“Working for a general practice at Kalvig & Shorter Veterinary Associates was an experience that was one to prepare me for more in life than just being a Veterinary Practice  Manager.

Dr. Barbara Kalvig and Dr. James Shorter are New Yorkers, successful business owners in the heart of New York City. The city where they make songs about making it there and you can make it anywhere.

What I learned, while working alongside them, was the magic needed to make it in business in NYC. Handling clients, many of them for decades, showed me that there was an example there that I needed to learn. Long-term customer care is the key to running a successful veterinary hospital.

During my years working there, I took away with me a discipline that I knew I needed to implement in my next venture. Every day there was a good day of learning, a good day of service to the community, and a good day for the animals. Customer care was emphasized every day because without that we had no base. The clients returned because they mattered to all of us. The team at KSV had to be in tune together. We functioned in unison and in sync even when we were not in the same room together. Working for a team like KSV will forever change the way you look at how to make it in NYC. Because to make it here, you need a good team and Kalvig & Shorter Veterinary Associates has two amazing leaders.” - Richard M. (Prior Practice Manager, Current NYC Restaurant Owner)
