Vaccine Research Center

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)

National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)

NIAID’s Vaccine Research Center (VRC) is recruiting for a senior scientist to oversee preclinical research activities, investigate novel vaccine delivery methods, and serve as the head of the Translational Research Program (TRP). The successful candidate will assist VRC investigators in designing, implementing, and analyzing experiments in a variety of animal models.

The VRC's mission is to discover and develop effective vaccines and biologics for infectious diseases of global public health importance. Through the combination of basic, translational, and applied research in immunology, virology, disease pathogenesis, molecular biology, structural biology, and clinical investigation, along with strong capabilities in regulatory science and clinical material manufacture, VRC advances novel technologies from the laboratory to the clinic in a safe and compliant manner.

Due to the dual research support and animal medicine functions of the position, VRC is seeking candidates with prior experience in virology, immunology, or a related scientific field, to include investigator roles on research studies, experience in oversight or management of breeding programs, and a doctorate in veterinary medicine. The position supports a broad spectrum of scientific research and includes veterinary and business management skills encompassing laboratory animal medicine research; animal program management; and developing, managing, and executing in vivo animal research contracts for VRC, financial oversight, and contract administration. The candidate will plan, manage, and help analyze data from animal studies evaluating immunogenicity and efficacy of vaccine candidates or other biomedical interventions. Experience in financial oversight of a large program is required.

The ideal candidate will have a record of peer-reviewed publication as well as experience in vaccine development research, relevant preclinical animal models, nonhuman primate studies, Animal Biosafety Level 3 animal studies, and good laboratory practice animal studies. The successful candidate will have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent degree (i.e., Veterinary Medical Doctor) obtained at a school or college of veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education. Additionally, the incumbent must possess a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice veterinary medicine in a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States that includes successful completion of the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination or its predecessors, the National Board Examination and the Clinical Competency Test.

Salary will be in the range of $183,501 and $227,600 (based on qualifications and experience).

To Apply

To apply for the position, interested candidates should submit a curriculum vitae (CV), bibliography, and three letters of reference sent directly from the referees. Please also include in your application, a description of mentoring and outreach activities in which you have been involved, especially those involving women and persons from racial/ethnic or other groups that are underrepresented in biomedical research. Please send all application materials to NIAIDVRCPCSS@niaid.nih.gov. Please contact Sarah Austin at austinsj@niaid.nih.gov with any questions. Applications will be accepted April 24, 2023, through 11:59 PM EST on May 3, 2023.
