The SPCA for Monterey County needs a full-time shelter veterinarian for companion animal herd-health management in cooperation with shelter leadership and fellow staff veterinarians.

Responsibilities:

• Examine, diagnose and prepare treatment plans for stray and surrendered dogs and cats
• Ensure complete and thorough medical records, including any additional details and documents needed to counsel potential adopters
• Perform recheck exams for pets within 14 days of adoption
• Participate in daily shelter population rounds at least 3 days per week
• Work with the shelter manager, foster coordinators, and behavior department to manage patients with more complex needs, some of which may participate in our Ruff Start program at Salinas Valley State Prison
• Keep shelter medical protocols up to date, develop new protocols as needed
• Work with the Humane Investigations department on examination and documentation for seized or surrendered animals
• Participate in training staff, volunteers, students from our local accredited VA/RVT training program, and occasional veterinary student externs
• Participate in euthanasia certification training for staff
• Work with the Community Outreach and Development departments to provide information and photos for social media content, newsletters, grant applications, and donor engagement
• Work with the SPCA Clinic manager and veterinarians to coordinate patient care involving surgery, sedation, radiographs, and dentistry. Digital radiography, ultrasound, and IDEXX blood analysis machines are on-site in the clinic building.
• Performing surgery is optional for this position. Interested veterinarians can choose to perform spay/neuter surgeries one or more mornings per week in the clinic, and/or perform soft tissue surgeries and dental procedures on shelter patients as needed.  Mentorship available for vets with interest but not experience!
• The work schedule for this position can be 4 or 5 days per week, 30-40 hours per week. The SPCA is open 8AM to 5PM seven days per week.  There is no after-hours on-call coverage required.  Work on weekend days is optional.

Requirements:

• Must hold or obtain a valid California veterinary license.
• Minimum of one year veterinary experience
• Shelter medicine experience or significant coursework/continuing education in this field
• Fear Free Shelters Certification, can be completed within the first 30 days of employment
• Reports to the VP of Shelter and Clinic Services

Additional desirable skills:

• Spanish language fluency
• Familiarity with other pet species such as rabbits, guinea pigs, small birds, and reptiles
• Humane investigation, forensic examination and necropsy experience
• The SPCA has a Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation center and a Horse and Barn Animal Rescue program. This position is not required to support these programs, but veterinarians with relevant experience may choose to spend 1-2 half days per week working with one of these programs.
