COLLEGE OF VETERINARY MEDICINE
DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY CLINICAL MEDICINE

Clinical or Tenure Track Assistant/Associate Professor in Zoological Medicine
Full-time, 100% (12-month basis)

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Veterinary Teaching Hospital invites applications for a full-time, 12-month appointment, Clinical or Tenure Assistant/Associate Professor in the Zoological Medicine Service within the Companion Animal and Zoological Medicine (CAZAM) section. The service consists of 5 onsite faculty, 2 offsite faculty, 3 onsite house officers (2 ACZM residents and 1 specialty intern), 2 off site house officers (2 ACZM residents), and 3 dedicated technicians. The Zoological Medicine team delivers core and elective courses across all four years of the professional curriculum, has large and diverse research programs, serves client and institutionally owned animals, as well as the medical needs of injured and abandoned wildlife. This service also delivers educational programs for clients and veterinarians locally, nationally, and internationally. The service operates within a newly renovated clinical facility with onsite digital radiography, ultrasonography, clinical laboratory space, dedicated receptionist team and dedicated examination rooms, surgical suite, dentistry suite, medication dispensary and species-specific wards.

Professional opportunities: The College maintains a full-service 230,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art hospital for farm, companion, and zoological companion animals that supports, engages, and advances the teaching and research activities of the college. In 2009, the College also established the Medical District Veterinary Clinic, which serves as the College’s headquarters for teaching, research, and public engagement initiatives in the Chicago area. In 2020, the College established the Veterinary Medicine South Clinic, where the Zoological Medicine Service shares clinical space with the Primary Care and Urgent Care Services as well as the Wildlife Medical Clinic. The Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine features modern research and animal care facilities and has recently completed an exciting, large-scale expansion of our surgical corridor, anesthesia suite, emergency services, intensive care unit, and internal medicine areas. The Veterinary Teaching Hospital has made large investments in infrastructure including the installation of 3T magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography (16- and 128-slice), and a state-of-the art linear accelerator.

We are seeking a candidate who is a strong team player and interested in utilizing and developing their clinical and teaching skills in a healthy, collaborative, busy and vibrant clinical teaching environment. The ideal candidate would be committed to this opportunity for professional development and advancement.

Personal opportunities: Urbana-Champaign offers the residential advantages of a medium-sized university city, excellent cultural opportunities, and a high quality of life. The candidate will find a richly diverse population, four beautiful seasons, a vibrant arts and entertainment scene, a variety of outdoor recreation opportunities, and the excitement of Big Ten sports events. It is an area that features a unique blend of high-tech companies and friendly, small-town hospitality.

The Champaign-Urbana area offers a range of businesses, recreation, and culture unmatched by other communities its size, due in large part to the presence of the University of Illinois. Whether you’re looking to raise a family, enjoy the outdoors, partake in a variety of cultural activities, or become part of the University of Illinois community, Champaign-Urbana has something to offer you. Requirements: Candidates must have a DVM degree or equivalent, preferred board certification (or board eligible) in the American College of Zoological Medicine, American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Avian, Exotic Companion Mammal, Reptile and Amphibian) or European College of Zoological Medicine.

Duties: This position is a 100% appointment in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine. The appointment will be a full time academic position. The primary responsibilities associated with this position will be to provide in-house patient care for wildlife, zoological and companion zoological species and oversight of veterinary student, intern, and resident instruction in the care of these patients. Clinical service duties may include care of hospitalized patients as well as scheduled emergency care on weeknights, weekends, and holidays. Emergency duties will be shared with fellow faculty in an equitable manner and there is an expectation that the person in this position will provide training and oversight to house officers. The successful applicant will also be responsible for delivering, in conjunction with the faculty in Zoological Medicine and Clinical Skills Learning Center teams, introductory clinical laboratories in the first and second year of the professional curriculum. In addition, collaborative delivery of instruction in the third-year core didactic and fourth year core clinical rotations will be expected. Faculty members are expected to perform the full range of designated faculty responsibilities including teaching, diagnostic/clinical service, outreach/public engagement, and university service. Normal teaching responsibilities can include didactic, laboratory, and clinical teaching of the discipline to professional students, interns, residents, and graduate students. Your contact hours of lecture and laboratory teaching can vary depending on the needs of the curriculum. Didactic assignments can occur during either on-clinic time or off-clinic time depending on the scheduling sequence of the four-year professional curriculum. Percent time dedicated to scholarly activities versus clinical service will be greater for a candidate interested in a tenure track position.

Salary: Commensurate with applicant’s experience and qualifications. The University of Illinois offers a complete benefits package.

Starting date: Anticipated starting date is as soon as possible after close date.

Application procedures: Applicants may be interviewed prior to the closing date; however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date. Applications will continue to be accepted until the position is filled. Applications must be received by 6:00 pm (CST) on June 16, 2023.
