Virginia Tech’s Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center (EMC) in Leesburg, Virginia invites applications for a 12-month rotating internship starting in or about January 2024. Intern responsibilities will include rotating between the internal medicine, sports medicine, surgery, emergency and anesthesia services, as well as assisting as needed in the nursing/patient care and imaging departments. The intern will participate in hospital rounds and case discussions.  In addition, the intern will rotate in the after-hours emergency and critical care schedule.  The hospital director will coordinate the intern’s schedule and a designated faculty member will advise and mentor the intern to set professional goals and achieve clinical proficiency in a broad range of disciplines.

The intern appointment is a non-tenure track faculty position with a rank of clinical instructor and will last 12 months. The anticipated annual salary is $40,000. Employee benefits include health insurance and enrollment in a retirement plan. Successful completion of the rotating internship program allows for 3 weeks (15 business days) of annual leave to be taken with no more than 5 days of annual leave used per month. A professional development stipend will be provided based on available funding. The stipend is expected to be $1,200 per annum.

The EMC is a premier full-service equine hospital in Leesburg, Virginia. As part of the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, the EMC offers advanced specialty care, 24-hour emergency and critical care, and an array of diagnostic services for all ages and breeds of horses. Located in Northern Virginia, the EMC is in the heart of the mid-Atlantic region’s horse country, close to an abundant variety of cultural and outdoor activities.

Our team of board-certified specialists in ACVIM, ACVS, ACVSMR, ACVECC and ABVP is committed to providing exceptional, comprehensive and compassionate veterinary care, being a valuable educational resource for referring veterinarians, future veterinarians and clients, and contributing to the advancement of new knowledge through innovative scholarship and clinical discovery. Our caseload of approximately 2,400 cases annually consists of horses of all breeds, ages and disciplines, and involves a diverse mix of surgical and medical cases. We are extremely fortunate to serve conscientious clients and dedicated referring veterinarians.

The clinical activities of the EMC are supported by a 24-stall hospital, a separate sports medicine clinic, ICU stalls for neonates and adults, a separate 7-stall biosafety level 2 isolation unit, 2 OR suites, a comprehensive clinical laboratory, digital radiography and ultrasonography, standing MRI (Hallmarq), computed tomography (Pegaso HD CT), nuclear scintigraphy (MiE), video gastroscopy, a comprehensive regenerative medicine laboratory, an on-site farrier service and a large technical staff including many licensed veterinary technicians.

The Stephen & Jane Hale Equine Performance Evaluation Complex is under construction and expected to be completed in December 2023. This 22,000 square foot structure consists of three surfaces (dust-free synthetic, poured rubber and asphalt) and contains a 75x130 foot riding area, two 12x130 foot jogging strips and two 50x50 foot lunging areas – all under one roof.

Applicants should send a letter of intent, a resume or curriculum vita and the names and contact information of three professional references who can be contacted by the search committee chair to:
