The Department of Large Animal Medicine, College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia, invites applications for a clinical-track faculty position in Farm Practice at the rank of clinical assistant/associate professor.

Farm Practice is one of four services within the Field Services Section of University of Georgia’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital’s Field Services Section.  The other three services are Theriogenology, Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Production Medicine.  Together, the section currently includes 9 faculty (1 Farm Practice), 1 staff veterinarian, 4-6 house officers (2 Farm Practice) and 3 veterinary assistants (1 Farm Practice).

The Field Services Section shares a mission to advance animal health and well-being through high quality large animal veterinary practice in the field with the ability to offer selected specialty services, clinical education for veterinary students, interns, and residents, and clinically applicable scientific study. Farm Practice serves a diverse large animal caseload (majority equine) in the greater Athens, GA area meeting the needs of local large animals and their owners while providing high quality clinical education.  The Farm Practice clinical rotation for fourth year students is a cornerstone opportunity for gaining experience and knowledge in large animal primary, first-opinion care in the field. Thanks to the diverse qualifications of the faculty and collaborative efforts of the services within the section, patients, clients, and students of each service within the Field Services section benefit from a wide spectrum of veterinary services that can be provided.

As a clinical track position, the majority of the faculty member’s time will be allocated to clinical teaching and service.  The specific faculty assignment will be tailored to the interests of the candidate in conjunction with the missions of the Farm Practice service and Departmental needs. The ideal candidate would be willing to enthusiastically embrace first opinion large animal cases (equine, small ruminant, bovine, and camelid) with an interest in dentistry being highly advantageous to compliment the training and interest of current faculty. The successful candidate should have an interest in promoting a caseload and innovative services that will serve the teaching and service needs of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Service to clients is an integral part of hospital duties. All faculty are expected to participate in scholarly activity related to clinical service and teaching, but establishing an independent research program is not expected.  Collaborative research is encouraged as is development of continuing education programs to veterinarians and the public.

The University of Georgia, the nation’s first chartered state-supported university, is a research-intensive land grant and sea grant university situated in the vibrant college town of Athens. Only an hour from Atlanta, Athens is a progressive university town with a rich history and is centered among beautiful surrounding landscapes. The area abounds in local music, art, literature, and theatre, and hosts many performances by national and international touring artists. The cost of living in Athens compares favorably with much of the rest of the country, ranking lower than the U.S. average (http://athensclarkecounty.com/82/Accolades). Additional information about the Athens area can be found at: http://www.visitathensga.com/.

The College of Veterinary Medicine values all members of the university community, recognizing that differences in experience and culture can only lead to a more well-rounded, accepting academic environment as embodied in our Principles of Community (http://vet.uga.edu/principles-of-community).

Qualified applicants are invited to submit: (1) a letter of intent including professional interests and career goals; (2) curriculum vitae; and (3) name, mailing address, and contact information for three professional references. Please apply at: https://www.ugajobsearch.com/postings/337761. For full consideration, all application materials must be received by October 20, 2023.

The employment starting date for the successful candidate is negotiable but could be as soon as March 2024. As required by University of Georgia policy, the successful candidate will be subject to background investigation. The University of Georgia is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, ethnicity, age, genetic information, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation or protected veteran status. Persons needing accommodations or assistance with the accessibility of materials related to this search are encouraged to contact Central HR (hrweb@uga.edu). Please do not contact the department or search committee with such requests

The successful applicant is expected to possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, be organized and team oriented, and be adaptable to a wide variety of circumstances. The successful candidate is expected to obtain and maintain a valid Georgia veterinary license as well as eligibility for a State of Georgia driver’s license.  Candidates should be board certified or eligible for board certification in a relevant discipline or have background and accomplishments that compensate for, or make irrelevant, the lack of board certification.  Candidates are encouraged to contact us if they have questions about meeting this requirement.  Additionally, it is advantageous if the applicant has a background in clinical, laboratory, and didactic teaching of veterinary students.

To be considered for the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor, candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree from an accredited college of veterinary medicine; have 2 years post-DVM experience in large animal practice. To be considered for the rank of Clinical Associate Professor, candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree from an accredited college of veterinary medicine; have a minimum of 7 years post-DVM experience (at the time of appointment); and be a board certified in a relevant discipline or have an exception as noted above.
