Job Title: Shelter Veterinarian FT or PT.  

Location: Humane Society of St Lucie County, Port St. Lucie, Fl

Who are we:

  • We are a non-profit animal shelter in Port St Luce, Fl, located on the Treasure Coast of Florida – minutes from the beach, between Orlando and Miami.   We have an annual intake of 1200 dogs and cats with an overall Live Release Rate of 97%. We are a Non-Kill Shelter serving the residents of Port St Lucie, making a difference in our community – provide lifesaving medical and surgical care to those most in need.

  • Competitive offering commensurate with experience and depending upon Full-time or Part-time: range up to $175,000.
  • Full-time or Part-time schedule (to 4 days a week)

  • Your focus will be on providing high quality medical and surgical care for your patients, no need to worry about billing of our in-house patients.
  • You will have a work life balance – weekends off. Should work up to 40 hrs. work week with no emergency cliental.

Provides leadership to Humane Society of St Lucie County personnel

  • Maintains effective communication with staff through daily contact, scheduled meetings, informally or in writing, as needed to coordinate and direct medical functions of the shelter and work as a member of a team.
  • Willingness to supervises shelter veterinary students and externs, ensuring proper training and timely review.
  • Provides guidance to staff for situations requiring immediate medical problem solving.
  • Participates in interviewing and hiring decisions for shelter veterinary staff.
  • Communicates directly to the Director of Operations and Shelter Managers about care of all shelter animals.
  • Treats people and animals with respect; contributes to effective teamwork; promotes intra- and inter-departmental cooperation; and fosters public relations beneficial to Humane Society of St Lucie County.

Performs the duties of a staff veterinarian, including but not limited to:

  • Evaluates and determines the disposition of incoming animals.
  • Provides medical services to all shelter animals, including physical examinations, diagnostics, medical rounds, and treatments.
  • Performs sterilization surgeries and other surgical procedures for shelter animals when necessary.
  • Ensures that shelter staff administer the appropriate medication as directed.
  • Advises, performs, or oversees euthanasia performed within the shelter.
  • Provides on-call, phone consultation services for shelter animal emergencies, to a limited extent.
  • Provides professional credibility to Humane Society St. Lucie County’s endeavor to help all domestic pets.
  • Maintains appropriate licensing and completes required continuing education courses.
  • Adheres to state regulations and organizational protocol regarding animal care, treatment, advocacy, and the mission of Humane Society of St Lucie County.
  • Takes immediate action to address any safety concern or noncompliance of safety rules that could put an employee, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk.
  • Must have strong computer and data entry skills.  
  • May perform feral cat clinics at the shelter to aid the community in managing the population.
  • Must understand and practice “herd” health principles as well as individual animal care.
  • Perform thorough exams on Animal Control case patients and document findings to give expert testimony in animal cruelty cases.
  • Being the Veterinarian of Record for the Shelter.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • DVM or VMD degree from an accredited university. ***New Graduates Considered.
  • Current Florida Veterinary license.
  • Current DEA license.
  • Maintain AVMA – personal liability insurance membership.
  • Prior shelter medicine experience helpful.
  • Ability to work effectively with and supervise a diverse group of people.
  • Solid team building and organization skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and maintain a calm demeanor.
  • Ability and willingness to learn shelter operational software.
  • Excellent communications
  • Must be able to walk and stand for longer periods of time.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license with an insurable record.
  • Port St Lucie, Fl 34986: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work. (Required)

Education:    Doctorate (Required)

Experience:

  • Animal care: 1 year (Preferred)
  • Customer service: 1 year (Preferred)

License/Certification:

  • DEA Certification (Required)
