Applications are invited for the position of Attending Veterinarian for Laboratory Animals (Assistant / Associate / Research Professor) within the Animal Resource Program (ARP) at The Pennsylvania State University.  This position is based out of the University Park Campus located in State College, PA.

The ARP is an interdisciplinary research support program that provides animal care and veterinary support to over 20 departments, 5 colleges, and 500+ investigative faculty and staff.  The ARP has a faculty and staff of 30 individuals including 4 veterinarians and 2 veterinary technicians who manage space and provide animal care in 12 campus vivaria including gnotobiotic and ABSL-3 facilities.  The ARP provides veterinary oversight for laboratory animals, agricultural animals, and wildlife at University Park as well as several outlying campuses. The University Park animal care program is fully accredited by AAALAC International, including the program for agricultural animals and wildlife.

This position holds an 80%, non-tenure line, faculty appointment reporting to the Director of the ARP.  This veterinarian will work closely with the ARP’s veterinary faculty and staff to assist in assuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies regarding the care and use of animals in research and teaching for all Penn State Campuses excluding the College of Medicine at Hershey.  Responsibilities include veterinary clinical care of laboratory animals; oversight of the rodent health surveillance program; disease surveillance and biosecurity; and oversight or performance of clinical procedures including anesthesia and surgery, collection and/or analysis of clinical samples, and necropsies.  The veterinarian will share emergency and on-call responsibilities with other ARP faculty.  Additional responsibilities include the hands-on training of research and animal care staff, reviewing Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocols as an IACUC member, and assisting with post-approval monitoring.  The veterinarian will provide collaborative assistance to investigators on grants and research contracts, will assist with animal model development, and will serve on the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).  In addition, the veterinarian will be responsible for working with staff across multiple compliance and administrative offices such as College of Medicine, Office for Research Protections, Environmental Health and Safety, Office of Physical Plant, Occupational Health and Safety, and others as necessary.

The position also holds a 20%, non-tenure line, faculty appointment reporting to the Chair of the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences within the College of Agricultural Sciences.  This appointment carries responsibilities for teaching and academic advising in the pre-veterinary curriculum.
