Summary: 

The Alabama Cooperative Extension System’s Urban Affairs and New Nontraditional Programs is seeking an Extension Specialist in Animal Science that develops research-based educational resources and implements educational programs in the Specialist assigned service area relating to animal production efficiency and care. The Specialist will possess an in-depth knowledge of animal science focusing on small ruminants (sheep and goats), and other small-scale production animals such as rabbits and poultry.  The Animal Science Specialist will also provide educational resources and support for companion animals such as dogs and cats. The Specialist provides leadership to Urban Regional Extension Agents and shares expert knowledge to relevant associations, producers, consumers, and small businesses.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  

The essential functions are representative of major duties of positions in this job classification. Specific duties and responsibilities may vary based upon departmental needs.  

Other duties may be assigned to be consistent with the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job. Not all of the duties may be assigned to a position. 

  1. Contributes to and supports the strategic planning process for the Animal Science program implementation and evaluation. 
  2. Assists in providing priorities for the Animal Science program team for resource allocation to facilitate appropriate programming and for program enhancement.
  3. Provides accountability for reporting program results with pre-determined measurement standards for the Animal Science program team.
  4. The specialist understands current and emerging issues of management, laws, research, public policies and risk management as it relates to production, maintenance and distribution.
  5. The specialist is able to communicate to consumers and producers the impact of animal production on the environment to address waste management and other related issues.
  6. The specialist pursues external funding and uses research-based information and state-of-the-art resources to prepare and deliver presentations and educational materials.
  7. The specialist will develop publications, curricular, media releases and other educational resources to market and deliver outreach services; develops and distributes bulletins, pamphlets, fact sheets, newsletters, , in service trainings, and digital products to support the needs of  Urban Extension Agents. 
  8. The specialist will provide assistance and collaboration to other specialists and statewide faculty; establishes formal partnerships, local and multi-state agreements, with other Extension Systems, agencies, and organizations. 
  9. The specialist will develop and provide weekly, quarterly, and annual reports; provide success stories with evaluations to document program impacts.
  10. Responsible for development of education programs that disseminates from ACES- AAMU to focus on sheep and goat production, herd health management and best management practices.
  11. The Specialist will work with Administration to establish a demonstration site for sheep and goat production.
  12. This position has supervisory responsibilities for Urban Regional Extension Agents and other members of the program team as appropriate.
  13. Guides the Annual Plan of Work process for Urban Extension Agents under the supervision of the Animal Science Specialist.

Minimum Position Requirements (including years of experience, certifications, licenses, etc.):  

Master’s degree in Animal Science, or related animal agricultural discipline (A terminal degree within 7 years of eligibility will be required for continued employment in the role) 

Some experience in developing Animal Science curriculum or experience in small ruminant herd health management and best practices. 

Demonstrated skill sufficient to identify, interpret, evaluate and apply program development information related to nontraditional animal science education for urban, nontraditional, and underserved audiences. 

A professional record of scholarship and leadership in an educational or professional service environment. 

In-depth technical knowledge of nontraditional animal science needed to function efficiently and effectively in small-scale production environments, with nontraditional audiences and to address program issues. 

Proven ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, administrators, and external stakeholders through written, oral, and/or social media. 

A demonstrated commitment to Extension core values of excellence, diversity and inclusion, global involvement, and accountability. 

 

Preferred Requirements: 

  • Earned Doctorate Degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, or related animal agricultural discipline.  
  • Prefer minimum of 3 years' experience in the Animal Science field, Education, or veterinary practice 
  • Experience in sheep and goat production, herd health management and best management practices.
