The Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine (PVM), Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS) invites applications for TWO part-time or full-time (12-month) Clinical or Tenure Track Positions in Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor. The successful candidate will become a member of the Small Animal Surgery Section that consists of Soft Tissue Surgery, Orthopedic, and Neurology/Neurosurgery subsections as well as the Physical Rehabilitation service. The small animal surgeons have access to state-of-the-art diagnostic (digital radiography, 64-slice CT scanner, 1.5T MRI, C-arm, ultrasound, scintigraphy) and recently updated surgical equipment (including a range of minimally invasive equipment, a dedicated Storz tower, and 3 ForceTriads). The Surgery service works closely with other specialty services, including Emergency and Critical Care, Anesthesia, Diagnostic Imaging, Cardiology, Behavior, Dermatology, Community Practice, Medical & Radiation Oncology, Internal Medicine, and Urology. Purdue Veterinary Hospital (dedicated in spring of 2022) has 11 state-of-the-art ORs (3 dedicated to Soft Tissue), ICU, intermediate care and general wards, dedicated treatment areas (including soft tissue surgery) and full range of aforementioned diagnostic imaging facilities.

Qualifications for the position include a DVM or equivalent degree, and board certification or completion of a residency program registered by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) or European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS). Candidates must possess excellent surgical and diagnostic skills as well as outstanding interpersonal, communication, and teaching skills, and be able to work effectively with faculty, staff, students and house officers. Salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience, with additional remuneration for after-hours emergency procedures. In addition to a professional career startup, funding for continued commitment to Purdue (‘pay & stay’) has been set aside. A background check is required for employment by the University.

The candidate will actively participate in the learning, discovery and engagement activities of the PVM and the VCS department. Learning: Participation in lectures and laboratories in the DVM and veterinary nursing curricula, clinical teaching in the Purdue Veterinary Hospital (PVH), and participation in training house officers. Faculty also participate in university-wide graduate programs (MS and PhD). Clinical Service: Providing clinical service to patients of the PVH (typical time commitment is dependent on Tenure vs Clinical Track and section need); supervising veterinary students, veterinary nursing students, and house officers; and building strong relationships with referring veterinarians. Caseload is robust and diverse in scope, and would allow candidates to build an area of clinical focus, such as MIS, surgical oncology, urology, etc.  Discovery: All faculty are encouraged to collaborate on clinical research projects. Tenure track faculty are expected to develop an independent research program. Research that complements the interests and strengths of current faculty interests is ideal but can also be tailored to the candidate’s specific background and interests. Clinical, individual and structured mentoring opportunities for research and developing a teaching portfolio are available within the college in addition to mentoring programs at the University level. The PVM is situated on the Purdue campus, allowing for a wide array of research opportunities, such as infectious disease, immunology, and oncology. Service and Engagement: Participation in committee work, professional organizations and community service, delivery of continuing education programs; and other appropriate activities are encouraged.
