Overview

Orange County Animal Services is proud to be the municipal shelter serving Florida’s fifth most populous county. Orange County, Florida is home to approximately 1.5 million people and includes “The City Beautiful,” Orlando. Orange County Animal Services is a large and evolving animal welfare organization, with approximately 100 full-time employees and is aided by support networks of 450 volunteers, 400 foster parents and more than 80 local rescue groups. The mission of Animal Services is to protect both the people and pets of Orange County.

The shelter receives approximately 15,000 homeless pets annually and strives to find as many as possible appropriate placement. Animal Services staff comprises four distinct teams – an enforcement operations team responsible for upholding local law in regard to animal welfare, a kennel team that handles the intakes and day-to-day care for the hundreds of shelter guests, a clinic team that handles the medical care and spay/neuter surgeries for the shelter animals and a communications team, which facilitate reclaims, adoptions, rescue placements and foster arrangements.

Representative Duties

Responsible for overseeing the veterinary care staff of the Animal Services Division to include managing standard response to medical issues and ensuring a consistent level of care is provided to the shelter pets. Assists with spay/neuter surgeries and other clinic needs to ensure that services are rendered as planned.

Work is performed with initiative and independent judgement under the direction of a designated manager. Performance is reviewed through observations, reports and achievement of desired results.  

Duties may vary based on area of assignment. The following are representative duties, it is not the intent to capture all duties performed by this classification.

  • Oversees daily medical procedures including, but not limited to, spay/neuter operations, daily veterinary rounds, individual exams for minor, moderate to severe medical issues, prescriptions, and administration of medication to ensure consistent care and response.
  • Collaborates with management, veterinarians and supervisors to devise standard operating procedures related to medical procedures and appropriate response to emergent medical situations.
  • Performs spay/neuter surgeries and other clinic needs in the event a veterinarian is absent, or the shelter is experiencing an increased demand for assistance.
  • Collaborates with management and clinic supervisors to evaluate existing procedures and daily flow to find innovative solutions to increase efficiency.
  • Assists with citizen inquiries and issues including working with the clinic supervisors to remedy customer service issues related to the clinic operations.
  • Coordinates training in the shelter medicine field for veterinarians. Seeks out latest standards in veterinary medicine in the shelter environment.
  • Works with clinic supervisors to handle veterinary scheduling to ensure appropriate coverage at the facility and coordinates availability of veterinarians to attend offsite events, when requested by management.
  • Responsible for veterinarian personnel matters such as hiring, progressive corrective action, training and development, and performance appraisals.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Doctorate’s degree from an accredited institution in Veterinary Medicine and five (5) years of experience in the practice of Veterinarian Services.

Must possess a current Florida Veterinary License.

Preferences

Shelter medicine field experience.

Prior supervisory experience in a veterinary setting.

Educational Requirements
