Essential Responsibilities:
Provide daily herd health management including, but not limited to, general health and wellness exams, lameness exams, reproduction associated procedures, new foal exams, lung scans, fetal monitoring, survey x-rays, health certs, insurance exams, and vaccinations / medications
Respond to all equine health emergencies
Provide professional, efficient and exceptional care; showing each equine equal respect regardless of value, age, or status
Perform thorough physical exams to develop and implement treatment plans based on the injury or illness presented
Administer preventative care including management of the vaccination program
Effectively communicate diagnosis and treatment plan to leadership team, barn staff, and ownership as applicable
Ensure the safety of both horses and humans by utilizing safe restraining techniques, following standard protocols, and maintaining clean & organized workspace
Maintain proper and complete medical records
Maintain accurate controlled substance inventory log
Manage communications with consulting specialists and emergency clinicians
Properly manage the assignments and performance of veterinary technician
Support division managers and farm manager in monitoring nutrition and weight
Support division managers in maintaining biosecurity protocols to prevent the spread of disease / infection
Support owners and executives on purchase decisions with sales ground exams and review
Other job duties as assigned
A Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (or equivalent) degree and veterinary license as well as accreditation to practice in the state of Kentucky are required. The ideal candidate will have at least three years of equine reproduction experience. A positive attitude and willingness to work as part of a growing team are critical to success. Strong emphasis is placed on communication and professionalism as well as attention to detail and a proactive mindset. The resident vet must be able to withstand all the physical requirements of an active thoroughbred farm inclusive of the varying environmental elements.
