The Park Equine Hospital Externship Program provides students the opportunity to gain real-world experience in a diverse and mid-sized practice, dedicated to providing top-notch equine medical care. This program provides the opportunity for students to experience all fields of the equine medical field. It was created with the mission to find quality Fellowship, Internship, Associate, and Veterinary Technician candidates and to provide a platform for veterinary and veterinary technician students to apply their clinical knowledge in a practical veterinary setting.
We accept Externship applications year-round, with flexible term dates. Externs must stay a minimum of two weeks and may not exceed a maximum of four weeks. Externs will be paid a stipend of $150 per week (four weeks maximum).
Program Guidelines:
On-site housing is not provided for this program. Externs must make arrangements for housing before their arrival, preferably near PEH (address: 5455 Lexington Road, Lexington, KY, 40511, Bourbon County).
Externs are expected to provide their transportation to and from the hospital.
Externs should come prepared with a stethoscope, penlight, bandage scissors, and suture scissors.
Externs are expected to dress professionally and appropriately for the weather.
The following dress code is required:
Tops: Plain, dark, collared shirts or scrub tops. (Logos and sleeveless tops are not permitted)
Bottoms: Jeans or khakis. (Shorts and gym attire are not permitted.)
Shoes: Boots are preferred; shoes that enclose the entire foot are accepted. (Sandals, open-backed, or open-toed are not permitted)
Jacket: Plain dark jacket or seasonally appropriate top layers.
Externs must sign and respect our confidentiality policy and waiver of liability.
Note: If necessary, PEH can provide housing recommendations and assist with arranging transportation.
Prerequisites for an Externship:
This program is recommended for veterinary and veterinary technician students in their third and fourth year or recently graduated veterinarians or veterinary technicians.
Good horsemanship and basic veterinary technical skills are expected and preferred.
