The successful applicant will work collaboratively with other faculty, including those in the community and shelter medicine programs and the veterinary medical education group, to develop and deliver content in primary care surgical and procedural clinical skills. We recently completed a new simulation laboratory for small animal clinical skills teaching and created a new space for large animal clinical skills teaching. Integration of clinical skills teaching with foundation courses in anatomy and diagnostic imaging is encouraged. Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine is committed to evidence-based teaching and to humane and ethical teaching strategies. The opportunity to engage in research related to veterinary medical education for individuals with appropriate qualifications and interests will be provided.

The position will be a joint hire between the Department of Comparative Pathobiology and the Department of Clinical Sciences, with the primary department determined in consultation with the successful candidate. Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine operates six hospitals and clinics, including specialty services, primary care clinics, wildlife, and a large animal field service. Total caseload is over 90,000 cases per year.

A DVM or equivalent degree, with eligibility for licensure in Massachusetts is required.  A least 5 years of small animal surgical experience in private practice, non-governmental organizations, and/or in an academic environment is required. Strong basic surgical skills are required. Experience in developing and delivering primary care surgical and clinical skills programs, including use of clinical simulators, and experience in veterinary medical education is expected. Emphasis is placed on the ability to coach students successfully through common primary care surgical procedures including but not limited to spay/neuter, and the ability to instruct students in managing intraoperative and post-operative difficulties.  Experience in a high volume spay/neuter setting, basic knowledge of ultrasound, and experience with dentistry, or the willingness to learn, is valued. Additional experience with large animal species is considered an asset. The position is available at the rank of assistant or associate professor, with the rank and track to be determined based on the interests and qualifications of the candidate.
