Lead and direct the HRA medical support program and team in DC with an ethic of inclusivity and collaboration. Direct clinic environments across the organization including those that support public-facing medical services, field services and emergency response to animals in HRA care. Work in collaboration with multiple departments to ensure excellent care is provided to animals in the custody of HRA with a goal of continuous improvement and expansion of treatment options. As part of a team, develop multifaceted community outreach and support programs that provide medical services with dignity to all those who use our services and to help other shelters develop their own programs. Direct reports include: Veterinary Technician Manager, Medical Administrative Staff.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Oversee medical operations across all DC locations.
Locations to include HRA Clinic, the medical facility of the DCH location, as well as the mobile clinic and pop-up clinics.
Provide supervision, leadership, and accountability to medical staff and volunteers.
Establish standards for on-boarding, training, and performance evaluation for medical support staff
Act as a liaison between the Medical Department and other departments and programs.
Ensure excellent patient care and record keeping for all animals in care and from the community.
Develop staff schedules to make best use of human resources to achieve goals of mission. Provide timely communication to the Vice President of Medical Programs on day-to-day operations.
Manage inventory and overall upkeep of the medical facilities
Train medical support staff on proficiency in various veterinary procedures. Provide training and learning opportunities for veterinary students, technicians, and other HRA staff.
Collaborate with Vice President of Medical Programs and Director of Medicine in the development of programs and protocols to best support community needs with a focus on sustainability.
Create and review Standard Operating Procedures for all areas within job scope.
Work collaboratively with all HRA departments to provide necessary support to meet program goals.
Work with other departments to increase the technical skills and medical understanding of staff, volunteers and the public to help ensure the health needs of animals are understood and tended to,
Provide reports and program updates as requested, including in conjunction with grant-writing for Development department.
Meet with donors, HRA Board, and members of public as requested to share information about program and goals.
Uphold the Values of HRA, working as part of team committed to success and accountability.
Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with veterinarians, including vets employed by HRA and community veterinary partners.
Keep up to date with latest developments in veterinary medicine as well as trends in shelter/community medicine.
Follow best industry practices in veterinary practice and shelter medicine.
Actively engage with the shelter medicine community to share ideas and promote learning.
Ensure adherence to existent and changing governing laws and regulations as they apply to veterinary practice and application in the shelter environment

Qualifications and Requirements:
Strong understanding and application of various veterinary procedures including but not limited to radiographs, skin scrapes, urine analysis, fecal analysis, cytology of various kinds, blood tests, wound care, triage, catheter placement and management, fluid administration, drug calculations, surgical support, management of emergency situations
Ability to assist in risk assessment and management of infectious disease as it applies to both individual and population health.
Demonstrated ability to train others in technical medical processes and procedures, and to build skills of staff at all levels.
Demonstrated knowledge and proven ability in veterinary practice management in private practice or community medicine.
Ability to thrive in a busy and rapidly changing environment, while providing direction and leadership to staff. Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, and motivate a team, and in identifying skills in others that can be developed. Ability to work effectively, both independently and in a team environment, in an atmosphere of multiple projects, shifting priorities, and deadline pressures. Ability to be flexible, detail oriented and able to prioritize.

Strong understanding and application of computer technology with proficient use of programs including Microsoft Office programs, email, internet, and database management software to efficiently accomplish work. Familiarity with or ability to quickly learn practice management software.
A commitment to the mission of the Humane Rescue Alliance and to caring for all animals regardless of age, breed, temperament or species.
Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays as needed, including on-call schedule.
Demonstrated track record of continuing education in advancements in veterinary care and technology throughout career.
Willingness and ability to participate in discussions, training, and performance of euthanasia.
HRA requires all staff to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, unless a medical or religious exemption applies. New employees must submit proof of full vaccination, or request for medical or religious exemption, before their first day of work in HRA’s workplace. Employees receiving a medical or religious exemption will be required to submit a weekly, time-stamped, negative COVID test to HR.

Consistently exposed to animals and animal allergens under conditions with limited alterations available.
Education and Experience:
College degree or equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in both veterinary technology and management.
Formal training as a veterinary technician and/or certification as veterinary technician.
Minimum 5 years of experience and a history of increasing responsibility as a veterinary technician and/or practice manager, preferably in a high-volume shelter and/or community medicine environment.
Experience must include managing veterinary support staff and/or veterinary technicians.
