Veterinary Student Externship in Small Animal Emergency
Emergency Veterinary Hospital (EVH) is an independently owned, AAHA-accredited 24/7 emergency and specialty hospital providing cutting-edge care to the greater Ann Arbor area. Our team includes emergency clinicians, specialists, licensed veterinary technicians, and experienced veterinary assistants dedicated to delivering compassionate, high-quality medicine around the clock.
Why Choose an Externship at EVH?
Hands-on emergency & critical care experience
Externs work directly alongside our emergency doctors and specialty clinicians, participating in triage, diagnostics, treatment planning, procedures, and patient monitoring in a fast-paced environment. You will gain real-world experience managing urgent and complex cases from the moment they walk in the door.
Our hospital sees on average of 40 patients per day and upwards of 60 patients per day on the weekend, making us an excellent place to gain extensive experience not only with cats and dogs, but with exotic species as well.
Specialty service exposure
Students have opportunities to rotate through our expanding specialty departments—including Oncology and Exotic Animal Medicine—where you can observe advanced diagnostics, patient management, and collaborative case discussions.
Extensive Exotic animal caseload
We believe that birds, reptiles, and small mammals deserve the same gold-standard care as dogs and cats. From parrots with big personalities to reptiles with subtle clinical signs, externs gain valuable experience working with a wide variety of species under the guidance of our exotics team.
Mentorship-focused environment
Our doctors prioritize teaching. Whether you want to improve your clinical reasoning, strengthen your emergency confidence, or explore specialty medicine, EVH externs receive individualized support and learning opportunities throughout their rotation.
Collaborative, high-standard medicine
As an AAHA-accredited hospital, we are evaluated on 900+ standards—ensuring students learn in an environment committed to excellence, patient safety, and best practices in veterinary care.
What Previous Externs Are Saying
For more than 13 years, EVH has welcomed dozens of externs from veterinary programs across the country. Students consistently tell us that their rotation at EVH prepared them for the real-world expectations of being a practicing veterinarian more than any other clinical experience. Many past externs have gone on to become Associate Veterinarians at EVH, while others have pursued successful careers in emergency medicine across the country—often citing their externship here as a pivotal part of their training and confidence
