The Swine, Cervid, Small Ruminant, and Equine Veterinarian serves as a key member of the Animal Health Division, supporting animal health programs across multiple species. Responsibilities include oversight of the U.S. Swine Health Improvement Plan (US SHIP), program management for cervid, small ruminant, and equine health initiatives, support of cooperative agreements, and general staff veterinarian duties such as disease investigations and responding to regulatory inquiries from stakeholders. This position also cross-trains in additional programs and contributes to emergency response efforts to support statewide animal health preparedness.

Education and Experience: Possession of a doctorate in veterinary medicine from an approved school of veterinary medicine and experience equivalent to one year of full-time increasingly responsible professional experience as a Veterinarian.

Overview
Under general supervision, is responsible for professional veterinary work of considerable difficulty and administrative work of average difficulty; and performs related work as required.
The employee in this class is responsible for assisting in the operations of the Animal Industries Division. This class differs from that of Veterinarian Diagnostician 2, in that an incumbent of the latter is responsible for laboratory work to isolate and identify the causative agents of diseases and performs epidemic investigation and necropsy examinations. This class differs from that of Veterinarian State, in that the incumbent of the latter directs the veterinarian program for the state.
Responsibilities
1. Assists in the development of policies and procedures for the administration of the Animal Health Division.
2. Assists in the development of division operating budget.
3. Coordinates between the state veterinarian's office and the field and laboratory activities.
4. Participates in regional and national organizations and forums in the development and review of animal health programs.
5. Acts as a consultant to field employees in specialized animal industries programs.
6. Performs important and difficult public contact and liaison work in explaining and interpreting animal industry programs; participates in conferences and seminars with livestock and industry groups.
7. Prepares, checks and reviews operating records and reports.
